Weekly Sisters' Circles: Purification of the Soul

Event Date:
Saturday, 15 March, 2014 - 18:00 to 19:30

Purification of the heart and soul is the essence of Islamic teachings. Just like our physical being, our spiritual muscles also need to undergo regular training in order to be strengthened. Join us on this journey of enlightenment to learn about the states of the soul, the evils associated with it and how to cleanse ourselves from them.

The daily responsibilities and stressors of everyday life can have a major impact on our mental and spiritual well-being. Joining the gatherings of remembrance and sitting amongst like-minded Muslim sisters can be an invaluable and unparalleled means of recharging your faith, expanding your knowledge base and renewing your energy levels for the week to come!

Islam: What's It all About?

Author:
Sajid Iqbal

Q: What is Islam?

A: The word "Islam" means peace and submission. Peace means to be at peace with yourself and your surroundings and submission means submission to the will of God. Islam is not just a religion but also a complete way of life. It deals with each and every aspect of life.

Muslims believe in one God and in the Day of Judgment and individual accountability for actions. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets beginning with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Issac, Jacob Joseph, Job, Moses, David, Solomon and Jesus. God's message was reaffirmed and finalised by the Prophet Muhammad.

Translation of Surah Yaseen (Surah 36)

Author:
Yusuf Ali (Orig. 1938)

In the name of God Most Gracious Most Merciful

36:1 Ya Sin.

36:2 By the Qur'an full of Wisdom -

36:3 Thou art indeed one of the apostles

36:4 On a Straight Way.

36:5 It is a Revelation sent down by (Him) the Exalted in Might Most Merciful.

36:6 In order that thou mayest admonish a people whose fathers had received no admonition and who therefore remain heedless (of the Signs of God).

36:7 The Word is proved true against the greater part of them: for they do not believe.

36:8 We have put yokes round their necks right up to their chins so that their heads are forced up (and they cannot see).

36:9 And We have put a bar in front of them and a bar behind them and further We have covered them up; so that they cannot see.

Under Islamic law, why is a woman's share of the inherited wealth only half that of a man?

The Glorious Qur’an contains specific and detailed guidance regarding the division of the inherited wealth, among the rightful beneficiaries.

The Qur’anic verses that contain guidance regarding inheritance are:

  • Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 180
  • Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 240
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 7-9
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 19
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 33 and
  • Surah Maidah, chapter 5 verse 106-108

There are three verses in the Qur’an that broadly describe the share of close relatives i.e. Surah Nisah chapter 4 verses 11, 12 and 176.

The translation of these verses are as follows:

Army imam says British Muslims can be good soldiers

The British armed forces' first Muslim chaplain says there is no conflict in being a Muslim and fighting for Britain.

Imam Asim Hafiz, an Islamic adviser to the Ministry of Defence, says Islam encourages the defence of life and country.

Muslims in the British military have been criticised by hardliners within the community, who have viewed their involvement in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as a betrayal of their faith.

Last month two men were convicted of murdering Lee Rigby, a British soldier, outside Woolwich barracks in south-east London.

They are due to be sentenced later this month.
