Some Ashurah-nce

How necessary is it to observe Ashurah?

Are there some who don't?

Are there some who put more significance on it?

How fundamental is it to Islam?

Its one of those "nice to haves" when it comes to the historical aspect of it - anything done on it is optional, but the ahadith are present to support the actions.

The later rememberance of the martyrdom of Hadhrat Imam Hussain (ra) and his family etc is also not strictly necessary, but as Muslims this is like a really very important event that happened.

So while optional, it is a big big thing, and probably needs to be given more focus in order to get the new generation to touch the history of the date too.

Many Muslims try to avoid having celebrations, weddings around this time of the year.

It is essential to mark the annivarsary of killing of Imam Hussain. He was 3rd holy imam chosen by God. Remembering Hussain's sacrifice for God and weeping on Ashura Day atones for sins of mourners. Hadith books tell us that all men and women who cry for Imam Hussain are guarenteed eternal life in Paradise. History books tell us that Prophet (pbuh) himself cried when he heard of news from Gabriel that his grandson would be murdered in the land of Karbala.

Some muslims dont love Imam Hussain. Thats because their leaders have a hand in his killing.
These astray muslim try to stop lovers of Imam Hussain from mourning him and special ceremonies and speeches in his honour.

The first people to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (ra) were Yazid and his followers while his family told people not to.

Mourning is capped to be only for 3 days.

:s Who killed Hussain (RA) then?

"How many people find fault in what they're reading and the fault is in their own understanding" Al Mutanabbi

You cannot call the killers either sunni or shia as they don't fit into the current groupings as their divisions came later.

The army was of Yazid, but there were also people from Kufa there, people who had called on Imam Hussain (ra) to come to Kufa.

Some sunnis will quote Imam Hussain calling out to specific people there by name and say "look, how Imam Hussain calls them out - it was the shia who killed him!" and some shias will say "look how Yazid and his army were not shias - they were sunnis!".

Both position are not entirely accurate.

and after martyring Imam Hussain and the majority of the male members of the family present, they did mourn the death. Call it political or maybe remorse, I have no idea why.

That's what I thought. So why was he the first to mourn :S

Muharram starts today, I think.

I learned about Ashura yday!

Apparently it was made obligatory upon the muslims even before Ramadan was. Another fast needs to be kept on sunday to differ from other religions

Yep,

Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashura. He asked:

"What is this?"

They said: "This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day." He said:

"We have more right to Musa than you," so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day. [Reported by al-Bukhari, 1865]

He did mention the grandsons of the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) but we are not allowed to commiserate their deaths. He went into the whole history of it, so complicated lol.
