Messing With Nature

What are your opinions on scientists messing with things.

Like

Selective breeeding?
Cloning?
"Designer" babies?
Anything else?

I dont think they should mess with the genes really but selective breeding in animals has its advantages and doesnt seem so bad.

Would the world be i dunno...boring maybe if everyone made designer babies, cuz they would all be perfect? but then again everyone's idea of beautifull isnt the same as "beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" so they wouldnt neccesarily be perfect to others. Well either way i don't agree with it. Has there even been any designer babies or is it something they think can be done??

And If you could have a designer baby what would it look like? (im "making" one now for my homework)

While i'm on the subject of cloning, to anyone who hasnt watched it, I reccomend the film "The Island". Smile

You should have a look at pedigree dogs. some have extreme illnesses and have been bred to just have one characteristic or another more prevalent.

Yeah thats the problem with most of the animals they mess with; they are ill or have a shorter life span etc so its not fair, but i was thinking of Cows and how they are bred so the certain cow can give more milk etc

Saying that, I was thinking the other day about something similar... (Human) "Devolution".

Is it possible that a species will get worse over time? And if so, how would such a thing be measured?

Evolution?

no, devolution. the opposite. things breaking down over time instead of getting better.

ah right, couldnt evolution be the solution?

Did anyone read that article in the paper, how men are a dying breed?

That according to genetic research the male genes are disappearing.

Back in BLACK

yes... in a like a couple of million years

Nope, but there are many "future research" papers and stuff that are utter baloney.

I remember reading an article on one which suggested that humans will break into "two distinct species" due to how society is going and the importance of computers etc - one tall, healthy good looking (people with technical jobs etc) the other shorter, well less looking (people with menial jobs, manual labour etc).

The theory being that success breeds success and those with pc skills will be more successful and those without will be like excess baggage which is dumped.

The problem with the theory? well, apart from being stupid, there is also the thing that the people being hunched back over PC's being more physically capable than those who are actually doing physical activity... one flaw in many.

Pointless.

@ fifi - "evolution" is not the answer as that is just a name and if it causes weakness over time etc, then its like devolution. going downhill instead of up.

AHA, idiots! Surely that would be down to nurture ratehr than nature.

Yeah, i was thinking about it, and came back on just to correct myself before u or someone else pointed it out but to late obviously Fool lol.

Yes obviously if devolution is taking place then evolution WON'T be taking place, i really should think before i type Fool

They would both be the same thing - change. devolution just implies a negative connotation in this sense.

This is all of course if the people buy into the theories in the first place.

It's quite good actually, I liked it too. Nothing to do with Scarlet Johannson...

Don't just do something! Stand there.

Okay, now I know what film it is.

Already there are new strange diseases from eating genetically modified foods.

Humans are meant to eat naturally grown crops.

Some scientists think they are God.

Well, they can think whatever they like, but I dont think
the Almighty would let them get away with it. They will pay.

I disagree there. God gave us free will and the power to make out own decisions.

While GM crops may be another thing altogether, if all the world used organically grown crops without any additives to kill weeds, viruses etc, there would be many millions more (if not billions) starving. Insecticides and the like allow for a doubling of crop efficiency.
