Yea - I hope they keep the measures for inter-departmental intelligence sharing and benefits for civil servicemen who died in 911, there is a lot of good stuff in the Patriot Act, but fortunately that's mostly permanent stuff and isn't sunsetted.

I see the wiretaps are up for consideration - this would be the wiretapping law which President Bush [i]broke[/i] with his domestic spying initiatives.

Yea apparently - the thing that gets everybody is he had no reason to break the Patriot Act in his wiretaps. He already gave himself unprecedented discretion and leeway when he originally set up the wiretapping provision - for example he can wiretap and then seek court approval 72 hours [i]after[/i] the wiretapping to do the wiretap! I don't know if they are allowed to use information from the wiretapping as evidence for it, that wouldn't fly with Amendment V - but you would think if they are tapping suspected terrorists they would already have enough information to get approval anyway, you don't look at suspects if they aren't suspects! And the burdeon of evidence required to get a wiretapping is incredibly low, it's almost like he broke it jus tbecause 1. He could, or 2. He didn't know he already had a law that worked just fine.
