Megan's Law in UK

Assalamu Alaikum, and Hello to everyone else Wink

On the radio they're discussing introducing something like Megan's Law in the UK. It's an American concept which means that parents have a right to know if paedophiles have moved into their locality. In some states in America you can even access this information via the internet. This law was introduced after a 7 yr old girl named Megan was raped, and murdered by a sex offender living in her area. Turns out he had previous offences, but the locals didn't know about him.

You may have heard about a recent case where this British man raped a baby around 12 weeks old, and he just got 5 yrs for it. Recently that was overturned in favour of 8 yrs. Personally I think we need the death penalty for these sort of ppl. Not cushy little prison cells.

So what do you think about the law, do you think it should be introduced? Will it help? There have been suggestions it's not a good idea coz angry parents will resort to violence against the paedophiles, and even paediatricians.

Right now it seems as if the UK laws are giving more rights and protection to child sex offenders, why is that? It's a well known fact sex offenders often reoffend rather than reform.

Supposing we were in an Islamic state what's the punishment for this crime? Death?

yeah heard abt that yesterday when watching the news n astagfirallah its disgusting how on earth does that guy get five years, cant imagine wht the kid n the mother are going thru.

abt megan's law i fink they shud introduce it here every parent has the right to knw whether or not their child is safe

some say parents will take the law into their own hand if they knw if an offender is living in their community, but then they say they will come down hard on those parents who do that

even if does create vigialantes i fink it is all worth for the safety of the children so yes i thnk we shud have it in the UK.[/color]

I remember hearing about this some time ago and although its a good way for parents to help protect their children by knowing what dangers are out there esp if theres pedo's in their area but there will always be people who take advantage of this and try to single these ex-cons out and maybe even take the law into their own hands.

I do believe the law is alot more leniant than id prefer but its preferable to a state of vigilante's. The law is and should remain reason without compassion. The 5-8 yrs is pretty standard sentance really for a crime of this nature. And out of those 8 years he'll probably only serve 6.

The death penalty unfortunately is not an option here as it was mostly abolished in 1998 by various Human Rights Acts and Crime and Disorder Acts. But as far as im aware it might still be inforce for military offences. But for things like murder or being a pedo... no.

I think this megan's law is a good idea because it let's the public know the pedo's that live in their areas and even if they (pedo's) get abused by other people don't they deserve it....

I think the law is leniant on alot of crimes that deserves harsher punishment like rape for example. John Reid has already said that pedo's are to be moved out of probation hostels next to schools so that's also a good idea (but can't pedo's use public transport to go nearer to schools....)

I've always been for the death penalty and it's a shame that they abolished it as it would have deterred alot of serious crimes. People here are always banging on about human rights and they turn a blind eye to what America is doing (it's foreign policy has changed dramatically after 9/11). If the death penalty is re-introduced then it should be used on rapists and murderers. Or atleast for rapists, cut their you know what off.

 i agree with muslimbro i have no mercy for such low life.

The government has been saying that prisons are filling up and that overcrowding is a major problem. They recently even cleared up a womens prison to put men in there.

The re-intro of the death penalty would have lowered the prison population, don't you think....
