huh? Which 'Godless labratory' would this be? It says in your post that the USA, France, Italy and Australia (who are surely amongst the world's most anti-Muslim governments) have all banned hybrid embryos.

Plus, because you havn't provided us with the link to the story, we can't even read for ourselves why 'scientists want to fuse human cells with animal egg to create mixed-species embryos'.

Muslim leaders say interest in Islam has increased in the past few years, and they also note that Muslims and Hispanics, many of whom are immigrants, share a number of common concerns. Steve Mort reports from a mosque in Florida that has seen a steady increase in Latino worshippers. [/b]

The al-Rahman mosque in Orlando opened in 1975 and is the oldest Muslim place of worship in the city.

But over the years its membership has changed, and now increasing numbers of Hispanics, like Jesus Marti, are joining the congregation. "It's the right way to be worshipping God, and I love the Islamic religion. It really has given me a lot of knowledge, and I have learned so many things from Islam."

Jesus, a Puerto Rican living in Florida, converted to Islam only a year ago. He is one of tens of thousands of Hispanic Muslims in the United States: estimates range from around 70,000 to 200,000.

He says that while he has faced criticism for converting to Islam, he has found broad acceptance as a Muslim in America. "Islam is not a country. Islam is a religion. Islam is definitely a way of life, for discipline where you follow and you try to enhance yourself to get the most positive things out of yourself for the benefit of your own self and for the benefit of your own family and the society as a whole."

Muslim leaders say Jesus Marti and other Hispanics choose Islam for a variety of reasons. They say Muslims and Hispanics face common issues and concerns, like finding their way in a new, unfamiliar country. The media focus on Islam since September 11th has also been factor.

Imam Muhammad Musri is president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida. The society has about 40,000 members. Iman Musri says Latinos and Muslims find they have a lot in common. "There are so many common denominators between immigrant Muslims and immigrant Hispanics who see the issues common to both of them -- immigration issues, as it is a big discussion in the United States, and there are other issues of trying to find a job, keep a job, buy a home -- all the same struggles two groups of people happen to be going through creates this bond between them".

Hundreds of worshippers attend Imam Musri's mosque, and there is an increasing demand for religious literature in Spanish.

He points to Spain's historical ties with Islam. And that many Hispanics find Muslim culture and values similar to their own.

Iman Musri says, "Many who come from Central and South America come with conservative values and, as well, Muslims come with conservative values. And here in the States they find that those values are put in question or are being challenged. So it is common to see Hispanics and Muslims working on similar projects in terms of family and education and reforms to protect their values, their conservative values they have."

For Jesus Marti and his fellow Hispanic worshippers, the decision to convert to Islam is personal, but also part of a broader trend.

He hopes greater diversity among America's Muslims will help strengthen understanding of Islam within the wider U.S. population.

That's a very serious development. They are considering much larger offensives and contrary to this report some sources have suggested as many as 50,000 troops have gone in this time. The US pulled out of Kurdistan several weeks ago leaving the Kurds mostly autonomous but the PKK have mounted attacks on the historically disputed Turkish border. Whether Turkey will become a major player there remains to be seen. They are a strong army that have trained with Israel in the past. It could portend a giant shift in its relations with the US and Iran, leaving the US in the difficult position of possibly having to defend Kurdistan against Turkey if fired upon.

The leader of a pro-Taliban mosque was captured hiding under a burka as he tried to slip through a tightening siege tonight, while hundreds of his radical followers reportedly surrendered to the Pakistani government.
Maulana Abdul Aziz was discovered by a policewoman as she searched students fleeing Lal Masjid, or the Red Mosque, in central Islamabad, where a two-day showdown with the government has killed 16 people and wounded 150.

Local television showed the bearded preacher being bundled into a police car, his face uncovered over a flowing dark cloak. The government claimed that another 1,000 militants, including many woman students, had also abandoned the mosque, enticed by promises of safe passage and 5,000 rupee (£41) in pocket money.

But the siege has not collapsed. Heavily armed militants - estimated to be between 1,500 and 4,000 in number - remained holed up inside the mosque, vowing to become martyrs and fight to the bitter end. Sporadic gunfire erupted as evening fell.

Abdul Aziz's brother, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi, remains at large, offering to negotiate with the government but saying that talks were "going nowhere".

Lal Masjid shot to public prominence six months ago after indoctrinated students launched an anti-vice campaign that targeted music shop owners and suspected prostitutes in a wealthy Islamabad neighbourhood, just a few streets from the diplomatic quarter and the supreme court.

Abdul Aziz, a radical preacher famed for his fiery Friday sermons, was the spiritual leader of the movement, while his brother Ghazi, a university educated cleric who speaks fluent English, emerged as its main spokesman.

The brothers are openly sympathetic to al-Qaida and boast of having met Osama bin Laden, whom Abdul Aziz has compared to the biblical figure of Abraham. They have also boasted of having hundreds of suicide bombers at their disposal.

Their vigilante campaign -- which involved abducting suspected prostitutes and burning pyres of Hollywood movies - severely embarrassed Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf. But he did nothing, saying that a violent showdown could spark countrywide violence.

The final straw may have been the abduction of seven Chinese employees of a massage parlour, which the militants termed a brothel, last week. The Chinese were released within hours but their government - a key ally of Pakistan - demanded greater security.

After an attack on a government checkpoint on Tuesday, the authorities finally hit back. A five-hour gun battle outside the mosque left 16 people dead. Then early today hundreds of soldiers rolled in, cutting off the electricity and imposing strict curfew on the surrounding neighbourhood.

Tonight parts of central Islamabad resembled a war zone, with machinegun wielding troops patrolling the streets and helicopter gunships buzzing overhead. The neighbourhood around the mosque was isolated by thick coils of barbed wire.

"They have no options but to surrender," said Javed Iqbal Cheema, a government spokesman. "The government is not into dialogue with these clerics."

Gen Musharraf seems intent on flushing out as many students as possible before considering a violent assault on the hard core. "The others want to be martyrs. But I don't want to die," said one young man who escaped today.

Pakistan's information minister, Muhammad Ali Durrani, said only "a few hundred" students were left, although most estimates were higher.

Meanwhile hundreds of students made their way home, escorted by relieved relatives. "We are so relieved, my mother is very worried," said Ziauddin, who had travelled 19 hours by bus from Gilgit to retrieve his 20-year-old sister, Qoresha.

The girl, who had just been released from police custody after escaping in an ambulance, was ambivalent about the experience. "Abdul Aziz and his brother are good men. Whether their actions are good or bad, only they can tell," she said from under a black burka.

"Continuing to sacrifice the lives and limbs of American soldiers is wrong. The war is sapping the strength of the nation's alliances and its military forces. It is a betrayal of a world," the writer observed.

The editorial concluded: "This country faces a choice. We can go on allowing Bush to drag out this war without end or purpose. Or we can insist that American troops are withdrawn as quickly and safely as we can manage -- with as much effort as possible to stop the chaos from spreading."

The article -- the latest sign of increasing public restiveness on Iraq -- comes as a growing number of Bush's formerly loyal Republican backers on Iraq have defected and begun calling for US troop withdrawal.

Still, the daily warned: "Americans must be equally honest about the fact that keeping troops in Iraq will only make things worse."

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.

"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

To applause from his audience of 300 members of Atheists for Human Rights, Mr Ellison said he would not accuse the Bush administration of planning 9/11 because "you know, that's how they put you in the nut-ball box - dismiss you".

Vice-President Dick Cheney's stance of refusing to answer some questions from Congress was "the very definition of totalitarianism, authoritarianism and dictatorship", he added.

Mr Ellison also raised eyebrows by telling his audience: "You'll always find this Muslim standing up for your right to be atheists all you want."

A convert to Islam who was previously linked to the extremist Nation of Islam, Mr Ellison, 42, has cultivated a moderate image since being elected last November, concentrating on issues such as health and education.

He is an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq. But he angered his own anti-war supporters by voting for a budget bill that aims to end the war over the next 18 months. His followers want an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

After his speech was reported, Mr Ellison said he accepted that Osama bin Laden was responsible for 9/11. But his demagogic comments threaten to plunge him in controversy.

This weekend the mosque is overcrowded, the cafe grubby, the social centre and offices scruffy and uncomfortable. Not for long, hopes Kilic Iqbal, 27, who works for the Turkish religious and cultural association that runs the complex. 'It will be beautiful, but much more too,' said Iqbal. 'The Muslims of Germany have been here 40 years, there are more than 120,000 in Cologne, it will show we are part of society.

'It' is Germany's biggest Islamic centre, to be built in a suburb of the cathedral city. Costing £20m, raised through bank loans and donations from 884 Muslim associations, its focal point will be a huge mosque complete with 183ft-high minarets, a glass dome and enough space for up to 4,000 worshippers. Next week the plans for the project will be finalised and submitted to the city council.

But though almost every party has approved the project in theory, the construction is still controversial. 'People are scared,' said Fritz Schamma, the Christian Democrat mayor. 'But the mosque will be built, that's certain. For me it is self-evident that the Muslim community needs a prestigious place of worship.'

Not everyone is of the same opinion. Last week the mosque project hit the headlines again against the background of a major row over a government-organised conference of 'national integration', the main plank of Chancellor Angela Merkel's strategy to integrate Germany's 15 million immigrants. A prominent survivor of the Holocaust said he feared the creation of a 'parallel [Muslim] society' where women were repressed. A writer pledged to read chapters from The Satanic Verses inside the mosque.

Bekir Alboga, the 45-year-old cleric who heads the mosque, was surprised by the resistance to the plan. 'We live in a democratic state,' he told The Observer. 'The right to worship is protected. Given recent German history, we thought extremism was a thing of the past.'

Serious opposition has only come from the far right and church figures. Cardinal Joachim Meisner, the leader of Cologne's Catholics, said the project gives him a 'bad feeling', alleging the minarets would 'change the skyline of the city', although they would be far smaller than the spires of the massive 12th-century Gothic cathedral. For his part Alboga accuses the churches of stirring up anti-Muslim sentiment to boost dwindling congregations. The fiercest resistance has come from Pro-Koln, an extreme-right group with five seats out of 90 on the city council. Manfred Rouhs, a leader, said Islam's 'social model' was not one 'that has any place in the middle of Europe'. Pro-Koln has called on right-wing allies such as the Austrian Freedom Party and Vlams Belaang, a Belgian extreme party. Right-wing demonstrations against the mosque turned violent last month with 100 arrests in running battles with police.

Coverage of the 'national integration summit', meant to be a triumphal launch of £500m of measures ranging from compulsory language and culture training for immigrants to sports and educational funding for marginalised youth, focused instead on the boycott by groups representing many of Germany's Turkish community. They were protesting against a law decreeing that foreign spouses must be over 18, proficient in German and have solid financial support before being granted entry. Kenan Kolat, chair of the Turkish Community in Germany, claimed the legal provision, aimed at stopping forced marriages, was 'discrimination'. In Berlin, unemployment in the Turkish population is 40 per cent. One study found that only 80 people of Turkish origin held political office in Germany. Ehrenfeld, where the mosque is to be built, bears little trace of ethnic tensions, however. 'We get along fine,' said office worker Christoph Becker, 35. 'There's never any trouble.'

For Alboga, the stakes are high. 'This is not just about Cologne. It is a test for Germany, Germans and German democracy,' he said. 'The world is watching. This is about setting an example for Europe and for the Islamic world too.'

Group prejudice on the continent has deep roots. Turkish and African immigrants in particular have been treated with suspicion and hostility in sections of French and German society long before terrorism raised its head. However given current concerns about radical ideologies being imported or spread into mosques and conferences, who is behind any such plan is bound to be of interest. In London, for example, there is concern and distrust about the proposed mega-mosque, that seems well-founded. I understand that as Muslims many of you are reluctant to see expansion of the community as a threat, but there are others who relish just that prospect. So the debate in Germany has both rational and irrational elements.

The United States is ready to hold new direct talks with Iran on the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, the State Department said Tuesday.

The Bush administration accused Tehran of supporting Shiite insurgents in Iraq.

"We think that given the situation in Iraq and given Iran's continued behavior that is leading to further instability in Iraq, that it would be appropriate to have another face-to-face meeting to directly convey to the Iranian authorities that if they wish to see a more stable, secure, peaceful Iraq, which is what they have said they would like to see, that they need to change their behavior," spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

"They need to stop supporting sectarian militias that are exacerbating sectarian tensions, they need to stop supporting EFP networks that pose a threat to our troops," he said, referring to Explosively Formed Penetrators, devices crafted to penetrate armored vehicles that Washington claims are being sent to insurgents by Iran.

"It is important to directly convey to the Iranian government the importance of their changing their behavior, not only for the safety of our troops, but also for the future of Iraq," McCormack said.

He said a date for the talks had yet to be arranged but suggested that discussions were under way on setting a time for the meeting, which would be the first between the two arch-foes since late May when U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, met Iranian officials in Baghdad.

That May 28 meeting marked a break in a 27-year diplomatic freeze and was expected to have been followed within a month by a second encounter. But since then, bitterness has mounted as U.S. officials have stepped up allegations of Iranian involvement in the Iraq insurgency.

Tensions have also risen over Tehran's detention of four Iranian-American scholars and activists charged with endangering national security. The U.S. has demanded their release, saying the charges against them are false.

At the same time, Iran has called for the release of five Iranians detained in Iraq, whom the United States has said are the operations chief and other members of Iran s elite Quds Force, which is accused of arming and training Iraqi militants. Iran says the five are diplomats in Iraq with permission of the government.

Until Tuesday the United States had resisted another round of talks despite entreaties from the Iraqi government and Iranian hints at their willingness to sit down.

Earlier Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran was willing to hold a second round of talks with the United States over stabilizing Iraq in the near future if Washington officially asks for one.

"We look positively at holding a second round of talks. There exists a possibility to hold such talks in the near future," Mottaki told a news conference in Tehran. However, he said the U.S. had not yet made such a request through official channels.

The Iraqi government, which is backed by the U.S. but closely allied to Iran, has been trying to get the two sides together, hoping some cooperation will reduce violence in the war-torn country.

I got to thinking yesterday, what can you say about a country that founds itself as a religious republic, openly identifies another nation as "Satan" and then turns around and sells itself to said Satan.

Iran really is a nation of prostitutes. Lacking international prestige and desperate for any chance to alleviate the pressure placed upon it by Washington they put down their rifles and all we have to do is sprinkle some money on them and command them to do it.

They sold themselves to the "Great Satan" and put down their weapons at our behest. It won't be long now before there is a McDonalds on every street corner, everybody is wearing Ralph Lauren and farsi is little more than an antiquated language their parents used to speak.

In my experience, Iranians are never less than friendly, helpful, kind and generous - and this was the same impression my parents got when they travelled through Iran 25 years ago. They said that Iran was where people were the most hospitable to them out of the 25-30 countries they visited (one of which was the States btw).

US is desperate to save face in Iraq after its Senators admitted that we have lost the war. Washington's own Iraq Study Group Report by Hamilton and Baker in 2006 called for Bush to talk to Iran and beg the Ayatollahs for help; and this is what we are finally witnessing. These talks are nothing but a once mighty and proud nation groveling at the feet of Iranians.

Iran is supposed to be a rogue state according to America.
So, the world wants to know what on earth is US doing talking to a "rogue state".
On one hand Bush accuses Iran of killing hundreds of US soldiers in Iraq; and on the other hand, US seeks talks with Iran.
