Last night I drove a barge down the Bridgewater Canal out of Manchester. They go very slow, which is good because it wasn't easy to avoid hitting trees and boats and bridges in the dark, so the journey took several hours but I made it. I'm thinking of setting up home in one (but it would have to be pretty big). They aren't expensive and I could probably put moorings and a bunch of upgrades on the mortgage. Then I could officially live all over the place. Little Venice one week, Cornwall another. 8)

I guess these are referring to the British Crime Survey because according to [url=http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/tool/Default.asp?region=9&l1=0&l2=0&l… record[/url] London easily has the highest crime rate. Maybe we should say that the best place is in the middle, round about Swadlincote. Obviously the further you stray from Swadlincote the worse it gets. Whatever you do stay away from Brighton or Scotland, because it is liable to be very unpleasant.

It isn't South. North of Birmingham counts as North to me. Maybe we should rename the thread "North, Midlands or South". And then I'll revise my theory and apart from a couple of Brummies we can doubtless all agree on the Midlands being the worst place. That makes far more sense than my Swadlincote idea.

erm nottingham is no where near north neither is brum. Brum is west midlands it could be regarded as "central England" Nottingham is more on side with the "east midlands" again no where near the north, you deffo have your bearings wrong :?

Nottingham is East Midlands but this thread is called North or South. I doubt I'm the only one who would consider the dividing line to be in Birmingham. You could hardly say Nottingham is "nowhere near north". It is more than halfway up a map of England and if you're counting Scotland, Manchester isn't north either.

Well i think the general consensus is that if your a londoner... or live around that region.. your pretty much a southerner... anywhere north of that and your a northerner.

Agreed, London has a lot of good things, but from what I've heard the people down there are rude and stuck up. The people up North are friendlier. Anyway, its way too crowded and congested.

City A has a 10% chance for you being a victim of some sort of crime, minor or major, but only a 0.0002% Chance of you being murdered. (one in every 200,000)

City B has a 4% chance of you being a victim of crime, but a 0.0005% chance you you being murdered. (1 in every 100,000)

Which is safer?

One has lower crime, but higher murder. The other has higher crime, but lower murder.

So When a report is concentrated on Homicide, City B looks worse. If a second report looks at overall crime, City A looks worse.

Pretty logical really. Not something psychology willt each you. :twisted:

The survey was based on personal safety so minor / property crime is out of the question.

We're only looking at fatal and non-fatal offences against a person.

I would still say that Glasgow is NOT the "safest city in the UK".

It used to be very bad before re violence mainly due to gangs but now it has calmed down but just heard the few days ago, 2 mins from where I stay a guy was stabbed in the head in broad daylight!!

The above links for Sheffield seem to be promoting it by saying "Oohh come here to Sheffield, it's so perfect and it's the safest city in the UK".

Everyone does that, you just need to look around.

Everyone knows that Nottingham is one (if not the worst) city in the UK. where the overall crime rate (and esp. gun crime) is high. You get independent research such as Reform saying that Nottingham is the most crime-ridden place in England and Wales, then you have the Nottingham Council saying that the report should be withdrawn, that Nottingham is fabulous city with a thriving economy, and other 'positive comments'.

Different reports / people say completely different things, it's difficult to know who to believe.

Only thing is Nottingham looks better than Sheffield.

Apart from the thing that Nottingham does not seem to have a proper city centre.
