My first thought is that the nightwatchman shouldn't be sleeping at night, but then, you didn't say anything about "having this dream every night for weeks". So my second guess is that the a forensic search found traces of TNT on his coffee mug.

No your first guess is right. He slept for a few nights for weeks, a few too many. He doesn't have to night-sleep every day.
I'd personally hold them all over a volcano's edge. Get to meet the real them.

A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.
who did it? (explain why)
really easy if you put your mind to it.

It is a description of the row above. (One 1, one 3 two 1's, three 2's and one 1 = 11 13 21 32 11 = 113213211)
Apart form that I have come to the conclusion that as a whole we are hopeless at riddles.
