First I've heard of this Shaykh.. who what where when did he appear from.

Yep his words were Harsh.. I've heard people say far worse things and havent had a fraction of the media attention this guy has had..

Its a stupid story, Omrows quotes and the ones in the media have been blown out of proportion and context in my opinion.

But for someone in his position.. he should have been more careful with his words.. He for one should know that Muslims do not have freedom of speech let alone freedom to diss women who show off their flesh.

According to The Australian's translation, he said: "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat," he said.

"The uncovered meat is the problem.

"If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab (Islamic headscarf which covers the hair neck and shoulders), no problem would have occurred."

But the mufti of Australia and New Zealand would not back away from his comments and said he was shocked by the way his sermon was interpreted.

"The Australian front page article reported selected comments from a talk presented one month ago," the sheik said.

"The title was 'Why men were mentioned before women for the crime of theft and woman (sic) before men for the sin of fornication'.

"I would like to unequivocally confirm that the presentation related to religious teachings on modesty and not to go to extremes in enticements, this does not condone rape, I condemn rape and reiterate that this is a capital crime.

"Women in our Australian society have the freedom and right to dress as they choose (while) the duty of man is to avert his glance or walk away.

"If a man falls from grace and commits fornication then if this was consensual, they would be both guilty, but if it was forced, then the man has committed a capital crime.

"Whether a man endorses or not, a particular form of dress, any form of harassment of women is unacceptable."

A spokesman for Sheik Alhilali said the backlash and criticism had badly affected him and he had been depressed and confined to bed all day, breathing with the assistance of an oxygen tank.

i would give the shaykh benefit of the doubt. his comments seem to have been misinterpreted. maybe he could have expressed himself differently though.

my brother could not believe this was on the 'front page' of the bbcnews website. they clearly just need some 'crazy muslim' story in order to meet the quota. :roll:

i agree with Ed to some extent. Allah has explained to us in the Quran that the islamic dress code for women is only there to safeguard their honour and prevent them from being harassed:

agree , agree, and again I agree!!! dress code does matter, but it's not 100% responsible for rape. Who's responsible in the other countries where women are covered?? Are you saying there ARE NO rape cases in the middle east?? Or are they just not being reported??

I agree, why do the biased media keep pointlessly misinterpreting what someone said by simply translating it into english word for word? Surely everyone knows that there is no other language as perfectly expressive as arabic. There is simply no equivelant in english, so don't even bother.

I think there should be a law against this. It's just another way to bash muslims and anyone who can't see this is just stupid.

I think that by discussing us issues we are playing directly into the hands of the kafirs. We have the Qur'an,sunna of the Prophet (pbuh) and Sharia law to deal with any issues we may have. But because we are living in a western society we have to abide by thier laws (to an extent). However the kafir's are using our own deen to divide to create tension between Muslim. Tex seemed quite angry at the Mufti for his comments but I dont feel the Mufti is at Blame here. The kafir's have translated, mis-quoted and taken far out of context what the Mufti had intended to say.

My brothers and sisters these kafirs may look like they are on our side and doing whats best for us but thats exact;y were they are conning us. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people he didn't exist! So follow the Qur'an and Sunnah that is what will benefit You both in this life and the next. calm down tex.........I agree with you. Strict dress code does not prevent rape. Yes rape cases in muslim countries are high, where women follow THE DRESS CODE to a T! And yet many cases are are not even reported.

In Muslim countries, such as Iran, if a woman accuses a man of rape then she must produce 4 witness (it is not very likely that someone will rape someone else in public) and as it is near impossible to produce 4 witnesses, the woman will be killed as it will be said that the woman had committed adultery. Don't know what happens to the man, I think it's about 60 lashes or something.
