UK model Campbell arrested in US

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been arrested in New York on suspicion of assaulting her assistant.
The assistant, a 42-year-old woman, needed hospital treatment after the attack at Campbell's home in Manhattan.

A New York Police Department spokesman told BBC News the assistant had needed four stitches to her head after being hit by a mobile phone following a row.

Her New York publicist said she suspected an attempt at "retaliation" by the assistant, who had been fired.

She said: "We believe this to be a case of retaliation, because Naomi had fired her housekeeper earlier this morning. We are confident the courts will see it the same way."

Detective Bernard Gifford said he did not know what the argument was about.

He said Ms Campbell would be charged with a felony and would later go before a judge.

A felony carries a minimum sentence of one year in the US.

Ms Campbell, who shot to fame after being discovered in London aged 15, is well known for her fiery temper.

In 2000 she pleaded guilty in a Canadian court to assaulting another assistant, Georgina Galanis, while filming in Toronto two years earlier.

Ms Galanis, 38, had accused the model of grabbing her by the throat and hitting her on the head with a telephone.

Under an agreement reached between her lawyers and Canadian prosecutors Ms Campbell was given an absolute discharge, preventing her from receiving a criminal record in Canada.

Uttering talaq in sleep lands couple in soup

A Muslim couple in Jalpaiguri district have been ordered by local religious leaders to separate as the husband allegedly uttered talaq three times in his sleep.

While the couple, who have three children, refused to obey the order since there was no discord between them, the community leaders are adamant that they must separate or face a "social boycott".

Aftab Ansari and Sohela have been married for the past 11 years. However, on the night of December 20 last year, Aftab allegedly uttered talaq three times in his sleep after a tiff with his wife.

The matter came to light when Sohela discussed it with her close friends and soon it reached the ears of the Muslim leaders.

The leaders, quoting the Shariyat, ruled that the talaq has to be implemented and if it is not acceptable, the only alternative was temporary separation for 100 days during which the wife will live at her father's house and spend a night with another man.

She can remarry her husband only after the man has given her talaq.

As the couple was unwilling to accept the verdict, the matter went to the family counselling centre at Falakata police station in Jalpaiguri district.

The counselling centre, attended by judges of the Alipurduar sub-divisional court, discussed the problem in detail on Saturday, but failed to find a solution.

The additional district session judge (second track), Muhammad Abdul Jalil, has directed the general secretary of the Anjuman Committee, Muhammad Abul, to settle the issue, sources in the counselling centre said.

The world is going crazy.

And why are so many stupid fatwa's coming from supposed religious scholars nowadays? There was previously a fatwa that a man and woman had to divorce, and the woman marry the guys father coz he supposedly raped her. The story was untrue, but the fact that supposed scholars gave such an erroneous ruling is the bit that boggles my mind.

the leaders should have been more worried by the presence of backbiting women in their community.

Girls attempt real-life version of video game

Residents alarmed; teens could be charged

Five teenage girls from Portage County face potential criminal charges after attempting to play a real-life version of Super Mario Bros.

The Portage County Hazardous Materials Unit and Bomb Detection Unit were called in to downtown Ravenna on Friday morning after seventeen suspicious packages -- boxes wrapped in gold wrapping paper with question marks spray painted on them -- had alarmed residents.

Boxes were found at the Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street, the Portage County Courthouse, Deluxe Pastries, the corner of Cherry Way and Main Street, Reed Memorial Library, Ravenna High School and a residence at Sanford and Main streets.

Five girls -- age 16 and 17 -- claimed responsibility for making and placing the packages. The girls said they found an Internet site that included step-by-step instructions for creating replicas of blocks featured in the game.

The Ravenna Police Department will be working with the Portage County Prosecutor's Office regarding possible criminal charges as a result of the game.

I find such thinking (by the girls, not the authorities...) enlightening...

Call for tough laws on dowry fraud

Lawyers in India have called for tougher laws to tackle the problem of non-resident Indians (NRIs) marrying women in the country and then abandoning them when the traditional dowry is paid to him.

Many thousands of young women and their families have become victims of dowry fraud, with estimates that up to 15,000 women have been conned in the state of Punjab alone.

The fraudsters come from countries such as the UK, Canada and the US, and travel to India or Pakistan, where they get married, and then disappear once they've received the dowry traditionally provided by the bride's family.

They often leave the bride and her family not only financially out of pocket, but also emotionally scarred.

"There should be some justice," Daljit Kaur, a Punjab-based lawyer told the BBC World Service's Outlook programme.

"There should be extradition treaties, and there should be a strong law so that people can get justice."

In some cases we don't know which country they are in right now. They are ruining girls financially, socially, and emotionally."

She added that the fraudsters are "spoiling three generations - the girl, her parents, and the children out of wedlock."

"The girl is ruined in all dimensions. Financially, she has been spoiled; socially, she can't get remarried; and emotionally, she is ruined.

"I have many cases in which the boy or girl is five, seven, 10 years old, and they have never seen their father.

However, its sad that not all marriages are conducted in an Islamic manner.

Salam

Indian films hero Salam Khan has hunting deers to impress the bollywood beauties, like Miss Rai.

He didn't seem to care that it was illegal in India to impress the ladies in such a manner.

He was arrested; and now he has comes up with new lines that are acceptable to the judges. Movie lovers have to wait while he rethinks his hobbies behind bars.

He has been in a lot of trouble with the police. He refused to pay them bribes like other actors.

He thinks he's a hero on the streets as well on the set.

He has been in the game for 18 years. He is also said to sleep with all the top actresses of Bollywood, including the former Miss World.

At least he is a muslim brother.

He is not a drunkard. If he was then Miss Rai would not come near him.

But she did.

And she's got the bruises to prove it.

Its seems Rai can't live without Salman. She bailed him out today.
I don't know what he sees in that Hindu. Lara is 200% better.

Listen Furbal. Stop accusing a muslim brother of being an addict.

Salman may be living in Bombay, but he is not addicted to drugs.

He is just a bit of bad boy when it comes to
hunting deers in front of his dears.
In any case, Rai deserves it from him.

Tabby cat terror for black bear

A black bear got more than it bargained for after straying into a family garden in the US state of New Jersey.

The unwelcome intruder was forced up a tree - twice - by the family pet, a tabby cat called Jack.

The terrified bear was only able to make its escape when owner Donna Dickey called the hissing cat into the house.

Ms Dickey said Jack liked to keep a close watch on his territory and often chased away small animals, but one of this size was a first.

"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty', never knowing he'd go after a bear," Donna Dickey told local newspaper The Star-Ledger.

"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," she added.

The bear was first spotted in the tree by neighbours who thought the 15lb (7kg) cat was just looking up at it.

They then realised the bear was afraid of the cat.

After some 15 minutes, the bear descended, but was chased up another tree, before finally making its escape when Jack was called indoors.

Bear sightings are not unusual in the area of West Milford in New Jersey, which experts say is one of the state's most bear-populated areas.
