Al-Azhar okays controversial book about Prophet Mohammed

Book, published in 1837 by Reverend George Bush, portrays Prophet Mohammed as 'imposter'.

The highest authority in Sunni Islam approved a book describing the Prophet as an "imposter" and Muslims as "locusts" that the Egyptian press continued Friday to attribute to the US president's great grandfather despite denials from Washington.

"The Al-Azhar Institute for Islamic Studies approved the book titled 'The Life of Mohammed, founder of the religion of Islam and of the Empire of the Saracens'," Egyptian newspapers announced on their front pages.

The book was published in 1837 by Reverend George Bush, whom Egyptian newspapers - including state-owned publications - have consistently presented as the current US president's great-grandfather.

But the government-run Al-Ahram daily said it had approved the book's publication "because it is a piece of documentation that paints a lively picture of the life of Prophet Mohammed."

Publication of Reverend Bush's work had initially been rejected by Al-Azhar and the turnaround puts an end to a year-long controversy.

An unnamed Al-Azhar official quoted in the official Al-Akhbar daily denied rumours that the publication was the result of US pressure.

"Al-Azhar does not bow to any pressure, whether foreign or local, when it comes to matters related to Islam," the cleric said.

Its a matter of national security. They want to know who did the deed. Who heard it. Who saw the smoke. And, who supplied the beans.

For those not too clued up the Holy Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam stated to the effect that one should not laugh when a person passes wind, it is an which we and they do.

Hence, in general finding such a thing funny is childish and more importantly against prophetic teaching and thirdly the subjects of the joke are none other than the heirs to Holy Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam.

One with an ounce of intelligence willl understand, and if a person does not then the inside of the earth is better for him than the outside.

I didnt know it was wrong in Islam to laugh at funny stuff. It reminds me of being a teenager again and feeling that everything in Islam is not allowed. 😢

Omrow — Sat, 24 Dec 2005 - 20:35

Some Muslims tend to believe false things that are attributed to God and His Prophet.

It is not prohibited in Islam to chill out and have a good laugh.

God is not a killjoy.

Read the translation of the Holy Quran for yourself. God nowhere forbids humour.

Medarris — Sat, 24 Dec 2005 - 20:43

alhamdulillah humour is a great blessing and a blessed thing.

But what humour?

The kind of stuff that is classed as humour and comedy in general today is nothing but crude bestial jokes which do nothing but further steep one into an animalistic state of mind.

The humour that Holy Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam practiced was a pure act, and the Muhaditheen have written that even in humour never was a lie utteredt by Holy Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam. There are countless incidents of such humour and people who are interested in what is a pure and halal method of light relief may refer to those incidents.

Further it should be noted that any joke which makes a mockery of religion or plays on one of the symbols of religion is nothing more than rebellion, foolishness and sin. Hence a person jokes abt the Ka'bah, or about Hajj, or about the sajdah, or about the beard, or about the miswak then that person is making a mockery of religion and better for him is to maintain a silence.

May ALLAh Rabbul izzat grant us purity in this world and the next. ameen.

Actually med is right.

You are not supposed to laugh at passing wind. Afterall its a natural act and everyone does it.

It is disliked to laugh at such things.

Two things:

1. Its wrong to insult or mock the culprit. Its not wrong to have a giggle.

2. Nobody laughs at the wind. We laugh at the wind bearer.
