What Did You learn Today?

MuslimSister

Salaam

It is said that "knowledge is what you hear from the mouths of men as they only repeat the best of what they have heard"

I think it’d be useful to post tid-bits of invaluable information-religious/non religious here in this thread.

It can be stuff that you learnt in work/Uni/Mosque/in a talk/something a wise elder told you/a life experience or something that you suddenly realised.

It can be minor or major stuff. It has to be stuff that you never knew before.

Today I learnt…

1-Why I shouldn’t trust, join or think highly of the Sufi Muslim Council

2-It’s quicker for me to get to Uni by Car than public transport.

3-Rubicon Pomegranate juice is tasty and apparently very good for you.

4-Spending so much time typing on computers leads to illegible handwriting and poor spelling

5-Being in the spotlight on a regular basis results in a higher chance of insincerity in actions and can negate all good work.

Keep this thread updated regularly…

- negative cultural stuff is not agreed upon by all

for e.g i was always cussed for doing stuff that had negative cultural conotations when i was in pakistan - i had to remind them many times that i live in england and we dnt follow cultural crap

i remember asking my Iraqi aunty on her wedding day why didnt she put eloborate mendi designs on her hands

she said to me that even tho mendi is sunnah - eloborate intricate patterns on hands is something in Iraq that only the loose dancer girls do

today i learnt i am a passive listener... i can convince people i am listening to what they are saying but my mind can be elsewer 😉

Bliss — Fri, 9 Feb 2007 - 01:12

i learn't today how blind i am without my glasses. i don't where them when i go out apart from that they on pretty much all of the time.

need to start eating more of my greens, especially spinach as I heard its good for your eyes it helps the back of the eye grow in pigmentation.

Imaani — Fri, 9 Feb 2007 - 16:46

I was quite shocked to realise that the top letter on the chart at the opticians is blurred without my contacts in. I put them in when I get up and take them out last thing so it was only when I took them out to have my eyes tested that I realised I was that blind.

My eyesight is very, very bad. I can't see anything without my glasses. I need my glasses 24/7 but i hate wearing them all the time! I get stupid marks next to my eyes and on my nose!! I wana get contacts but their too expensive, im gona save up and buy some frameless glasses which i can wear all the time and not look as geeky as i do with my other specs!

Imaani — Fri, 9 Feb 2007 - 19:59

Contact lenses will most likely be cheaper than rimless specs with thin lenses.

Depending on your prescription, you can get contact lenses for about 15 quid a month.

If you don't have a source of income you should apply for a health exemption form, which makes eye tests/dentist fees and contacts etc free.

p.s Are carrots really good for your eyes?

Noor — Fri, 9 Feb 2007 - 23:12

I'm a student so i get ema so i wont be allowed to get that form thingy. I'll just have to save up 200 pounds and buy some from specsavers! And as for carrots, i don't think they work. I've been eating them for ages and they haven't made a difference to my eyes.

MuslimSister — Fri, 9 Feb 2007 - 23:17

EMA is only £30 a week isnt it?

A health exemption is also for people with little money coming through....I don't work and I'm surviving on my PGCE bursury money at the moment. But I was still granted the health exemption.

Ironically though, my sister doesnt work either and unlike me, she has has to pay her Uni fees as well and yet her health exemption was rejected.

There's no harm in trying.

By the way, is it true that once you start to wear glasses your eyesight deteriotes cos they start to rely on the glasses...my brother failed his eye test but he isnt wearing glasses, cos he was told that his eye sight isnt that bad, and if he starts to wear glasses they'd only get worse.

Yes that’s true. If i was to take of my glasses and walk outside, I’d probably get knocked over. I'm very dependent on my glasses now. Only wear them if you need them real bad.

Where can i get that form from?
p.s Are carrots really good for your eyes?
Carrots have Vitamin A in them so they are supposed to be good for your eyes, in fact anything which has Vitamin A in it is good for your eyes.

Did you know that if you eat too many carrots, your skin will turn yellow! The reason being you have probably saturated your body's ability to store vitamin A over a short time and so it is showing up as an orange tint on your skin. It is best too limit the amount of carrots you eat if your skin turns yellow/orange, bcoz too much Vitamin A can kill a person!

Noor don't expect carrots to work like magic, just bcoz carrots are supposed to be good for eyes doesn't mean they'll cure you from blindness

Not funny bro! Having bad eyesight is very serious and very dangerous if you don't have you specs with you!!! My uncle went to PK and with the pressure of the sun his pupil opened up and his eyesight was cured!

Bliss — Sat, 10 Feb 2007 - 00:14

once i stopped wearin my glasses i started squintin my eyes and made my eyesight worse as i was straingin the nerves r sumat. now id be lost without my glasses/contacts.

MuslimBro — Sat, 10 Feb 2007 - 00:59

What I'm trying to say is that don't eat something and expect to have good eyesight.

Having problems with your eyes can result in sometimes irreversible damage.

Have you ever thought of laser eye surgery?

yashmaki — Sat, 10 Feb 2007 - 10:28

ud have to munch on carrots like rabbits to go yellow, come on most ppl don't eat that many. Just one large carrot is too much for most ppl. 😂

oi oi spinach buna with chicken yum yum or same style with prawns deeeelicious. Don't cook the spinach into a mush like most punjabis do, keep the bright green colour if u can, otherwise u lose all the vitamins no point eating it. i hate mushy, slimy spinach, prefer it slightly on the crisp side.

Well Dr bro can too much iron have bad side effects? coz im above average ive been told not to take iron tablets or supplements.

MuslimBro — Sun, 11 Feb 2007 - 16:57

One of the reasons why mothers are told to breastfeed their child is because the milk is rich in iron compared to cows milk or even infant formula's.

Did you know that the WHO considers iron deficiency the number one nutritional disorder in the world, and estimates that as many as 80% of the world's population may be iron deficient. Anyway to answer your question about too much iron.

Excess amounts of iron or iron overload can result in:
- toxicity
- several genetic diseases
- and even death

We went out last night, dinner and the symphony (La Damnation de Faust) and I'll tell you what England can keep John Williams, Levine is absolutely brilliant!

Right, well, I learned that babies sleep CONSTANTLY. When we left they were sleeping, when we got back they were sleeping and just outta curiosity I checked with one of the nannies and she said that they slept all evening long.

...Which leads me to a question.

What sinister things are babies up to all day that wears them out like this?

MuslimSister — Mon, 12 Feb 2007 - 11:01

Babies need sleep to grow….plus eating, bathing, crying and having their nappy changed tires them out.

You’re lucky they sleep so much….most parents have the problem of their baby being awake all night and asleep throughout the day.

I've learnt that I'm a terrible judge of character. It depresses me how many times I've been proven wrong about people. :?

Seraphim — Tue, 13 Feb 2007 - 22:32
Maybe you're expecting too much from people.
you can usually judge a persons character by seeing how they interact with other people... usually people who are his inferiors.

MuslimSister — Tue, 13 Feb 2007 - 22:33
Maybe you're expecting too much from people.
Not really. All I expect from people is to be all that they say they are.

I usually trust their word. So it really depresses me when their actions prove otherwise.

Beast — Tue, 13 Feb 2007 - 22:36

Don't trust their word then.

Make excuses for them if they don't do what they said they'd do.

Seraphim — Tue, 13 Feb 2007 - 22:38

Or... just dont trust anyone unless they have given you a reason to trust them.
