Interestingly, for some reason the only suitable careers for Asian children is Medicine.. be it pharmacy, dentistry, optician etc…
Why is that?
When I was 16 and choosing my A levels for sixth form, my dad told me to choose the sciences so that I’d be able to do Medicine in University. Since, I was a little child I’ve been going on and on about wanting to be a teacher when I grow up, any other career choice was not even an option…
I have never had any interest in the sciences, nor did I excel at science and I could never stand the sight of blood.. :?
Higher education is difficult…so you really need the interest, motivation, desire and a certain level of expertise to study and pass the subject you have chosen to study for 3/4 years…..
Anyways, I chose my A levels in subjects that interested me and I was good at…such as English, Sociology, cos I knew that no University would accept me to study Medicine if I did not have any A levels in science… And I pretended to dad that I had chose the sciences at A levels…boy did I have to hear a killer lecture when dad found out what I did.
As a child my elders tried to deter me off my chosen career path by telling me that no one will marry me if I’m not a doctor ?! Even today, when I hear people praising their kids …it’s usually “Wow-he/she is a Doctor” And what? Ones profession is only a part of who someone is…it does not totally define someone’s worth.
It’s not even as if Doctors are loaded…and many of them are debt for years since they’ve been in higher education for so long…
Being a doctor is a noble profession….but NOT if you’re in it solely because of the money, status or to increase your suitability for marriage.
And yeah, we need Muslim doctors BUT don’t we also need Muslim teachers? Journalists? Writers? Counsellors? Designers? Architects?
What is it with Asians parents obsession with Doctors and why isn’t any other career even an option?
Any thoughts?
Wasalaam
its about respect and izzzat to the elder generation
so and so's puthar is doin medicine blah blah blah
pride factor
but besides that, there is a shortage, and its a good way of making an honest living, as opposed to sales people

lol.
My grandad was an anaesthetist, my dad is a urologist, his younger brother is a paediatrician, his sister was an opthamologist and she changed to paediatrics, her husband is a paediatrician too, the brother after that is a GP.
My mom's eldest bro is a GP and her youngest bro specialised in sports medicine.
...so u see this issue is quite close to home.
nah but its not really an issue in terms of pressure, believe it or not we have ppl of other professions in our family too! my mom used to be a headteacher, one of her brothers was a boxer (now he's a trainer), another bro of hers is into business, her sisters a dentist. my dad's youngest bro was the odd one out among the siblings coz he went into computing, lol.
there's never really been any pressure on me, my siblings or cousins in terms of our career choices. some of us have chosen to go into medicine, whilst others went into computing, dentistry, law, etc.
i discussed this with my dad once, he was trying to explain to me about why asians are so big on medicine, i remember 'financial security' and 'noble profession' being mentioned, but cant really explain properly beyond that... will have to have that chat again and get back to u muslimsis.

anaesthetists put ppl to sleep before the operation, 'podiatry' is the branch of medicine that deals with feet, pediatrics is the branch that deals with children alone, opthalmology is the branch that deals with treatment of the eyes, sports medicine involves the treatment of injured athletes and their rehabilitation.

A shortage of Asian's in Medicine? :?
Many professions are a good way of making an honest living.
i think he meant a general shortage of doctors in the NHS?

Isnt it the most over subscribed course?
And how come its so hard to get in...my friend had two A's and a B in the sciences and still couldnt get into any good University in London :?
wow Aasiyah
I think its pointless if someone becomes "forced" into becoming a doc, I always think if you do an occupation your main goal should be to help others that way you always feel motivated and having an interest in what you do has to be a must as it keeps u sane lol
i personally fink medicine isnt for every1, not every1 can hack the stress n pressure, not saying that all other jobs dont hav stress n pressure wiv it, as we are all individuals we all hav different but equal abilities all that matters is that we put them to gud use, i hoping to go into medicine or law or psychology but u defo need the heart to do medicne coz u can hav brains n become a doctor but really u need the passion to do it too coz who would want a doctor treating them who jus memeorised chunks of text books thye need to be into it whole heartedly my parents didnt tell me u hav to become a doctor, dad said you do wot u want so long as you are happy

I recently met two ppl who came to visit us not concerning our health, they were complete strangers. Anyways rather than just introducing themselves they said hi i'm doctor so and so. Her husband also said i'm doctor so and so. I thght right ok i only bloody wanted to know your name, not your profession, but thanks for telling me anyway  It's definately used as a status symbol amongst asians. I hate the way asian parents brag about their kids being doctors as if they had some part to play in their childs success. Sure they may have funded the studies but ultimately it was down to their childs own intelligence and hard working nature that got them qualified in the first place. Not every average joe is cut out to be a doctor, just as not all of us are cut out to be engineers, lawyers, self employed etc etc.
ma sis m8 was like that proper squeamish but now shes in her final year doing medicine n shes doing gr8 shes even doing hospital rounds

i guess coz its really important that u are dedicated and have the ability to remember everything u learn in the 5/6 years to make a good doctor. As Mez said, someone else's life is in the hands of a doctor, so its important that the standards are set high.
i obviously agree that noone should be forced into a profession, but i dont think we should belittle Medicine either. It IS a noble profession, i'm not being biased, honest. i wouldn't have said the same thing so confidently when i was younger, but it took one thing to change my perception. once when i was 13, i went to visit someone at the hospital. just outside the entrance there were benches, and there was a doctor sitting on there with his head in his hands. he looked so worried, miserable, forlorn, words cannot express how sorry i felt for him, and i cant get that image out of my head. since then i have had nothing but respect for doctors, especially surgeons, imagine what it must feel like to literally be in life-and-death situations everyday, as part of your job.

lol i remember doing that in A-Level Bio! i think it was a cow's heart tho, cant remember. apparently a pig's heart is the closest to the human heart so we were told to bring one in, but the muslims all bought in a cow's heart.

medicine is a very rewarding job, one woman surgeon i met told us that the most rewarding thing she received was when she is invited to graduations of some of her patients when she treated life threathning diseases they suffered as children, n the best present she received was cards from her patients thanking her for her hard work sooo touching

Of course, Medicine IS a very noble profession...but that solely depends on ones intention/reasons for practsicing Medicine. Is it to save lives and make a difference? Or is it for the money/prestige?
Of course, we're not in a position to question people's intentions...but truth is, not everyone enters Medicine for noble reasons....some doctors lack compassion and ethics.
thats so true sis, we were told if your in it for the money then dont bother applying cuz the are other jobs who pay much much more, but obviously it does giv a good pay, but the difference between a normal doctor and a good doctor is whether they hav morals and genuinely want to go into, recent cases lke shipman didnt help, they take an oath to save lives n let ppl die

What is it and asian familys, that they would always want their kids or one of them to be a doctor and there has to be one person in the family that is a doctor!

i know that does happen but im blessed to be in a family where we dont hav that pressure on us, n i fink becoz of that my older bros n sis are doing really well in woteva theyre doing as they hav my parents full support n its their own decisions
