Politicising the Quran

This man is holding open the Quran at a Hamas rally celebrating the party's election victory.

This 'gesture' is made in an Al Qaeda video too. One person holds the Quran open and a few other people hold klashnikovs in front of the Quran.

Muslim Brotherhood members do this also.

Does anybody know whether they open up the Quran at a particular verse or do they just open it at any random page?

Normally the Quran is opened at a page referring to the martyrs, and generally at Surah Tawbah, according to my knowledge.

Naj posted a hadith a while ago which said a sign of the end of time was that the Qur'an will be seen as a formal book...

If we start to 'respect' the qur'an so much that we neglect to read it, is that not worse than using it as a show of force?
