apologies for reviving an old topic, but i was wondering if the events of 7/7, the Birmingham riots and French riots have had much of an impact on British Muslims today.
Has it made you want to integrate more into british society? do you feel compassion or anger towards those in the riots?
and what does it mean to integrate into british culture?
the oldham and bradford riots were a while back, but what impact have they had on muslims today?
do young muslims feel disillusioned living in a country they may not be able to fully connect with?
soon after 7/7 a woman was asked on live TV if she was British or Muslim. She lashed out and asked why she could not be both, that by being Muslim she was not denying her Britishness.
what are your thoughts on this?

Well you still seem to be suggesting that the Holocaust should be taught in order to make people think a certain way. Thats bordering on mind control in my opinion.
No, I'm not.
Why can't you just teach kids that racism and killing is wrong. I don't see how using pictures and films to scare them (with the assumed hope that this will make them not be anti-semitic) is any different from what they do with children in Totalitarian states.
So again, you've followed through on an assertion before I had a chance to answer it. Not sporting, and pretty telling in this instance. I mean, what is with this 'mind control' BS? Do you often accuse people of that?
Okay maybe "mind control" is a bit of a strong word but I'm not an expert in this field so I don't know what the standard word for it would be.
Basically I mean using emotional stimuli in order to gain a certain reaction. Its not incredibly sophisticated but it' still wrong especially with young children. If you believe that people are basically rational then such things shouldn't be necessary.
I have no problem with the Holocaust being taught as an historical subject but I am against it being used for the purpose of seeking to engineer people's attitudes. That includes teaching primary school children about it.
muslim integration
The holocaust is 'emotional stimuli in order to gain a certain reaction'? Teaching children about the holocaust is an exercise in 'engineering people's attitudes'? Sounds ugly. Whatever, I'm sure there's loads of ifs and buts about holocaust education. You and your ambiguity can jus' chill and talk about it all you like.

Maybe it's just my American background but any time a government is implimenting a religious history or religious study into its curriculum - especially on the mandatory education level; I get a little worried.
funnily enuf no1 picked up on this... :|
Dave, 'A-level' is not mandatory education... mandatory education is upto the age of 16, culminating in 'GCSE' exams. after that u can do what u want. those who choose to go on to college (2 years) for 'A-levels' can choose whatever subjects they like... and Islamic Studies happens to be on offer. for that matter, GCSE Islamic Studies is also on offer, but it is, again, in no way compulsory.

lol crazy crazy brits.
Our education system needs revamped big time - we are losing out to China in some important sectors like engineering, at a time the economic world is talking about specialist outsourcing.
lol it's funny we are taught this stuff in private schools where it is assumed we are "the leaders of tomorrow" but not in the public schools.
I wonder if that's indicative of aristocratic tendancies in the US political system.
That's neither here nor there - am I correct in assuming Britain has no civics courses?

i remember learning about the crusaders in history, they mentioned richard the lionheart, raved on about him like he was an honourable man. But the muslims were never really mentioned Salahuddin never heard his name at school. Surely if you teach a subject both sides of the story should be given. History classes in the brit education system is prob the most lacking. i thght it was really pathetic.
The most we learnt about religion was christians visit churches their sabbath day is sunday. Here's a picture of a church let's go visit one kids! Same was done with temples, gudwaras, mosques, and synagogues tis was a joke. Considering this was secondary school loooooooool. No depth to the topics.
I think we touched upon the holocaust but i don't think we learnt about the real horrors no depth again.
Black history slavery, never heard of it in school.
The depression yeah heard so much about that i nearly died from it.
We made lots of pretty pictures, displays maps for history i can't say i really learned much from it.

Q.What do you get if you integrate one over (cabins)?
A.Natural Log cabins! hahahahaha

Okay, being honest now, how many people got that?

lol, i can definitely agree with you on that one!
it put me off choosing history as a GCSE option
In history we did loads of work on WWI and WWII, a alot on the English/British monarchy from the Tudors to the Stuarts, a bit on Black history (slave trade etc)...cant really remember much else.
In R.E at GCSE level in the fist year everyone had to take Judaism, in the second year you either took Christainity or Islam. Our R.E teacher was quite good. I learnt more about Islam at school than i did at the mosque, which is quite shameful really.
Dawud, i think i kinda got that one

Going back to the education system... I remember during junior school (that is year 2-6?)
Learning about the aztecs, ad their religion, about the amazon rainforest, the river nile about rubber production in malaysia...something else about malaysia...
and we did not learn that much in senior school... apart from the bloody tudors and stuarts! I hated them with a passion at that point. teach us about some good wars or summat!
(Or maybe I have my memories mixed up?)
then there was william the conqueror, Christopher columbus, and his spanish funding (cometo think about it... this was only a couple of years after spain rechristianitified... why the muslims not emntioned?). We were taught abit about the crusades... and then onto WW1 and WW2.
Now ww1 was interesting. ww2 more of the same...

I remember we spent a quite a bit of time the on Islamic History in sometime in the first couple of years. (I can't really remember what about though!)
We studied the holocaust quite a bit though
I can't remember black slavery though.
Most of it was modern world history, about countries like Germany, USA, 'USSR' and Britain of course. We spent an awful lot of time on the Nazis. But I'm not complaining as it was interesting.
The Religious Education was a joke though. I recall sitting in a lesson drawing 'mendhi' patterns so we could stick them on a wall for display. And that was one of the better lessons too.

hmm lets see:
pretend 'S' is the grrek letter 'sigma' when used for integration:
Y=logeX
(NOTATION: lgX = logeX )
take antilogs:
e^Y = e^(lgX) = X
d(e^Y)/dx = d(X)/dx
(e^Y)*dy/dx = 1
therefor: dy/dx = 1/(e^Y)
but: e^Y = X
so: dy/dx = 1/X
that is: d(lgX)/dx = 1/X
thus integrating both sides with respect to X :
S (d(lgX)/dx) dx = S 1/X dx
cancelling gives:
logeX = S 1/X dx
or to neaten it up.
S (1/X) dx = lgX
QED.

True - but teaching about the Civil Rights movement is also part of the American Curriculum and the point of that is both historical and to decrease racism.
Perhaps British schools could do something similar by teaching about the way asians were treated when they first came to Britain

what?
You mean say the british history was anyway less than glorious?

but usually when they talk about those things its in the past and with hindsight, nazis, slavery etc. think asian history is too fresh to be taught objetively.
