Despite constituting more than half the Ummah and being the most
active part of it, there are very few Muslim women scholars today.
In earlier generations after the Prophet (pbuh) the teachers of
many companions, tabi'een, great imams and revivers were women.
Furthermore, our brothers are lazy and apathetic nowadays. We have
many active sisters who are also professionals, but very few take
the route of becoming scholars of Islam. This is important,
particularly in the West where sisters do most of the work, but at
the same time, ask many questions which male scholars often fail
to respond to. Shari'ah Councils need women scholars but not
Islamo-feminist armchair critics or post-9/11 consultant types who
rate themselves just because they have a PhD. One often sees them
talking about politics in Islam on TV or radio, attending countless
demonstrations, and turning up at intensive courses hoping to
become a DIY Shaykha overnight.

How can sisters become real shaykhas or women scholars? What is
required of them and what is happening to women scholars in the
Muslim Ummah today? Is anything being done to help increase their
numbers? Is it practically possible in the West with domestic
obligations and other family commitments?

*Shaykh Muhammad Akram Nadwi studied and taught Shari'a at the prestigious
Nadwatul 'Ulama (India).He has ijaza from various scholars including
Shaykh Abul Hasan Ali Al-Nadwi, Shaykh Abdul-Fattah Abu Ghuddah
and Shaykh Yusuf Al-Qardawi. He has a doctorate in Arabic Language and has
authored and translated over 20 titles on Fiqh, Qur'an and Hadtih including
his 2 volume work on the lives of female companions (scholars) of the
Prophet. As a leading scholar steeped in traditional Islamic learning
and in modern academia, Shaykh Akram is currently a research fellow
at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford University.

Road: From the A406 (North Circular), turn off at Ilford and go towards
Central London along the A118(Romford Road). The Froud Centre is located
on the 4th intersection on the right.

Rail: Come out of Manor Park station onto Station Road. Cross over,
turn right and walk to the main traffic lights. Turn left at this
junction onto Romford Road. Walk 300 metres up the road.
The Froud Centre is located on the 5th intersection on the left.

Tube: Come out of East Ham station, cross over to the opposite side
and catch the 147 bus. Ask the driver to drop you off on Romford
Road near the petrol station. When you exit the bus turn left
and walk 100 metres up the road. The Froud Centre will be on your right.

I think that is the case, atleaste with our branch.

Alhamdulillah I know from certain ulama that their sisters, wives, daughters etc are alimaat and they teach but they do it in concealment.

At one time there were more female scholars. Even Ibn Taymiyya the great fundementalist had a female teacher.

I beliee there are many female scholars in west Africa but thats because its actually promoted by various religious organisations.

no point calling ppl alim alimaat if they dont do amal upon what they learnt,

alhamdulillah theres alot of alimaat who get farig every year...2004 class 150 girls got farig from 1 madressah hear in uk, 1 of the biggest jamaat ever in that place.

well they stil alim/alimaat innit.

But I said in a previous thread somewhere that being alim isnt abt the books u have passed. I mentioned how Shaykh said to two boys in our class, one hafiz and doing dars e nizami and other just hifz student.

Shaykh said:'' Hafiz, u have become a hafiz and will complete ur alimiyya but I fear u will remain a jahil''

and then Shaykh said pointing to the other boy: '' and this one, I do not know if he will even complete his hifz, but he is already an alim''

That is a profound and deep statement.

So yeh being farig and not making amal isnt gud, but they still alimaat innit.

Most stupidest thing said! We all know that mothers are the ones who bring children up, so most male alims have their mothers to thank them for their good upbringin.

Its a duty of a all muslims men and women alike to spread the word of Islam.

I think Aisha Bewley (the one who translated Ash- Shifa) is a scholar?

But, yeah I agree that there is a shortage of woman scholars. Public speaking is so hard...I rate people like Salma Yakoob.

I suppose the lack of female scholars is due to the fact that they are not encouraged as much as they should be? Or maybe its due to other reasons

Personally due to obvious reasons I feel more connected to women who preach...

I seem to also think it is not encouraged as much, also if all think like Omro its no wonder, preaching Islam is not a man's job its the responsibilty of everyone.

I think it would be great if we had more female scholars as women tend to feel more comfortable speakin and asking questions from female scholars. I dont mind attending gatherings where there are males scholars but at times if u want to ask somethin you might not feel so comfortable or confident.

i want to spend my time more practically with dawah, magazine, articles, research...... coming on this forum takes up too much of my time, especially when i have to debate with shaykh ahlul bidah fatwa machine and co...
i realised...my time , energy, resources, effort is being wasted and can be utilised elsewhere.19 year olds might have time spreading their stuff and arguing over the size of the beard....i havent.
so i will just be popping on the forum every now and then....i'll just leave it to the taliban to continue his fatwas and the other rubbish he spits out. forum has turned in to a deobandi/tablighi sect thing anyway...brelwi v deobandi....which i dont really want anythging to do with.
its up to admin now to keep the sectarians in order....in that case...God help us all:-)

my focus is on the magazine inshallah...

I feel exactly the same way-and I know many other people who do as well

this forum has become crap

there's SO much effecting Muslim youth but people like to get bogged down with irrelevnt matters :roll:

even when a decent topic startes somehow it all leads back to the same old sectarian issue

u made a good decision to focus on what important-

but I'l miss u- many decent members are slowly dropping or cutting down their time here one by one 😢

I think some people are being abit of a drama queen. Ed you have to admit that you are some way responsible to making this a secetarian forum, you keep mentioning Taliban and deobandi as much as other are mention Brewalvi and Halwa. At the end of the day you only get into a agrument if you want too, look at the way Admin handle the Khatam jaiz thread, so simple one post all the fact and no room for agruments.

I don't think the forum has gone crap, but it seem all the best convo are happening at 12-2am in the night, and i can't stay up that late. All it is that the forum has become so fast moving and discussion are started and finish so quick.

I think Admin has been doing a brillant job of late and he cut out alot of the rubbish, I don't think we had a mawlid, birthday or music discussion for a week and too me that progress.
