What I learned 5/8/2012
There are a number of circumstances / conditions that allow us to miss the fasts of Ramadan.
Yes, no need ro re read it. That's right, under the following circimstances it's not a sin to miss the fast of Ramadan.
These are:
Fear for life in case of illness or great age.
Pregnancy and Breast Feeding.
Madness.
(real) Jihad (not the Taliban one)
To compensate, however, one must fast as many fasts as he misses as soon as he is out of such conditions.

Having a cold?!! Why'd you not fast cuz of having a cold :/ I don't think that's a valid reason. Your body would actually need to be in risk for it to be permissible to not fast.

In my little book of facts it DID say "illness" but it also said "fear for life"
I don't think the standard flu comes under than category unless you have some disease where your natural immune system doesn't work.

I suffer from a disease which really weakens my immune system yet even then i'm still able to fast without and major problems. So i think it'd only be a valid reason if your health was in serious danger.

I agree. Hence the "fear for life" bit.

ok.maybe not the cold.. but it doesnt have to be some special illness.
any illness that the fast would cause to worsen. thats what it is. if fasting is going to make you MORE sick. then you dont fast. and if you have a BAD flu and you need to stay hydrated and drink chicken soup and what not. you dont fast.

Unconsciousness and insanity.

Really dislike the word: 'insanity'
As to me that just means to behave in a way that is different to the norm of society and culture. Let's be definitive here, what psychiatric medical conditions does a person have to have to give them the leniency not to fast during Ramadan?

A cold doesn't go away by you eating food anyway and it won't be made worse by fasting. I coils never bring myself to not fast for just a cold. Each to their own.

Seems like theres a bit too much liniency going on around here. If fasting is held with so much importance, little excuses like a bad flu, or a bit of pain, isn't genuine at all. I just think that it isn't good enough.

its nt abt a cold or bit of pain. its abt: if nt eating is going to make ur illness worst. then u shldnt fast. i used a bad example when i mentionned flu.

Okay, i agree with you there then. Like, a severe illness which is so bad that by fasting you will make more problems arise and hence, doctors and Muslim scholars have advised you not to.
