Developers and purists erase Mecca's history

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Some of Islam's historic sites in Mecca, possibly including a home of the Prophet Mohammad, are under threat from Saudi real estate developers and Wahhabi Muslims who view them as promoting idolatry.

Sami Angawi, an expert on the region's Islamic architecture, said 1,400-year-old buildings from the early Islamic period risk being demolished to make way for high rise towers for Muslims flocking to perform the annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest city.

"We are witnessing now the last few moments of the history of Mecca," Angawi told Reuters. "Its layers of history are being bulldozed for a parking lot," he added.

Angawi estimated that over the past 50 years at least 300 historical buildings had been leveled in Mecca and Medina, another Muslim holy city containing the prophet's tomb.

Wahhabism, Saudi Arabia's dominant doctrine which promotes a strict narrow interpretation of Islam, was largely to blame, he said.

"They (Wahhabis) have not allowed preservation of old buildings, especially those related to the prophet. They fear other Muslims will come to see these buildings as blessed and this could lead to polytheism and idolatry."

In London, Geoffrey King, Islamic art and archeology specialist at the School of Oriental and African and Studies, said the fate of Islamic historic sites in Saudi Arabia was "depressing."

"The religious authorities have failed to appreciate the significance of these buildings to Muslims and scholars worldwide," said King, who taught for several years in the kingdom and stressed many young Saudis agreed with him.

Followers of Wahhabism say Muslims should focus on Mecca's Grand Mosque, which contains the Kaaba -- an ancient structure that more than 4 million Muslims visit each year as part of haj and umra pilgrimages.

Actually, dave, I mentioned previously that the hindu soldeirs are open targets. Sorry but thats the way it is, similarly for the indian army, the kashmir freedom fighters are open targets. I dont think I am crazy or bloodthirsty is agreeing that teh fighters on both sides are legitimate targets.

Deprting jews back to europe isnt such a crazy idea. If they could come 'back' to 'israel' after millenia I dont see why they cant go back to their real homes.

Beating people is fun! Joke. But seriously , the guy grew up with the truth in his face and stil he renegades, what is with that.

Killing indian occupation soldiers is not a bloodbath, the whole point of a soldier is that he fights and puts his life into the equation. I do not think in terms of groups. Others may, but I speak for myself only. You have just shown there you do. I try to be objective, and will agree with I think is right, not what a particular group or person says.

saying 'Ya allah is aadmi ko raahat dila' means the person is misquided, but hidden a prayer.Language also plays alot into it.

When taken to account, you always deny your 'almost' insults. But you continue to use them.

I find underhand remarks in alot of posts both by yourself, and others. I generally ignore them, as thye may be unintentional. However I normall se such thing in almost every post by yourself. Soe times its a joke, at other times it may even be subconscious. But it is definitely there.

Like Jerusalem to the Christians, they should rightly belong to God in islamic hearts, and shouldn't be exploited for pilgrim money.

The proceeds from pilgrim money could be used to help poor muslims do a hajj or better yet eat dinner.

The man has a good a good point except that I would distinguish between Jews and Zionists and say that the original Palistinian Jews weren't too keen either when they noticed Zionists buying up Palestinian land in the 1800's. But lets forget the Ottomans are also share a portion of the blame for creating legislation that blatantly stole land off the Palestinian Peasants who had rights over it (so that the Zionist could buy it).
