A student has been found guilty of murdering the pregnant wife of her secret boyfriend.

Harmohinder Sanghera, 23, of Solihull, West Midlands, stabbed 17-year-old Sana Ali 42 times in a "ferocious" attack at her home in Bury, Greater Manchester.

She had been having an affair with Mrs Ali's husband, Sair Ali, who is 25.

Manchester Crown Court heard Sanghera killed Mrs Ali after Sair Ali lied about his wife and her pregnancy. Sanghera has been jailed for life.

'Extreme distress'

The dentistry student was ordered to serve at least 14 years before being considered for release.

In sentencing, Judge John Saunders told Sanghera: "She (Sana) was trying to make her marriage work and she was 11 weeks pregnant at the time of her death, a fact of which you were well aware.

"You waited until you could be sure nobody was in the house. You tried to disguise her death as suicide. That was unsuccessful because she fought to save her life."

He said of Sanghera: "The degree of distress that she was acting under was extreme."

The court heard that the murder was "born of jealousy and desperation" after Mr Ali lied about his marriage, and then his wife fell pregnant.

Mr and Mrs Ali were cousins and their marriage was planned from childhood.

Sanghera met Mr Ali through mutual friends in 2005, but he did not tell her he was engaged and used their different religions - Mr Ali is Muslim and Sanghera a Sikh - as a reason for them not to be married.

Earlier this year, after Sanghera found out he was married, the court heard she agreed to be his "second" wife.

They entered into a relationship referred to as a "Mu'ta" - a temporary form of marriage for a certain period of time, which was due to run out days after Sanghera killed Mrs Ali in her home.

She travelled from her West Midlands home on 11 May 2007 when she knew Mrs Ali would be alone.

Mrs Ali let her into her home and upstairs Sanghera stabbed her 42 times, inflicting a deep wound to her abdomen while doing so. Both mother and child died at the house.

Det Supt Jane Antrobus, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This is an absolutely tragic case.

"Sanghera was jealous and desperate and went to incredible lengths to try to save her relationship the result of which was this horrific murder."

Mr Ali said: "When we were told of Sana's death it ripped our hearts apart. We were in shock and disbelief.

"The loneliness and emptiness in our hearts and lives are indescribable."

Sick world isnt it.

I was talking to sister about this only today.

I dont understand how any woman would have it in them to stab another woman 42 times in the stomach - over a man!

If anything, she and woman from back home should have ganged up on the guy for two timing them!

MuslimSister — Sat, 1 Dec 2007 - 22:01

Again, I dont understand it - she wasnt even a Muslim so the 'time limit' on a mutah marriage shouldnt even been an issue for her.

And I dont understand how a sikh woman would have benfitted from a mutah marraige - her religion doesnt accept such a marraige and under british law this polygamous relationship would have been undercover and not accepted anyway.

Plus, I heard that mutah marriages can last up to 99years.

You dont know what a guy might do years down the line.

The lady ^^ from back home was young, naive and innocent. She didnt see it coming.

I know a lady who was a proper brummie rudegirl - proper streetwise and clued up, she was married for YEARS with a guy from back home, only for him to cheat on her with another lady from back home when she was pregnant with his third child.

SubhanAllah :| nastyness.

Alisha — Sat, 1 Dec 2007 - 22:48
So why did you say subhanallah?
Why shouldn't I? ^o)

They were all fornicating, and then Allah sends an earthquake and they all run out, scared for their lives. If there wasn't an earthquake they'd have carried on prostituting and would still probably carry on. Maybe the earthquake changed some of them for good, unless they got killed running out, n that was one of their last actions.

:| U ask a load of Questions.

SubhanAllah means All Praise is due to Allah, and Allah can send earthquakes as punishment to those who sin, so SubhanAllah, cos it may have saved some people from continuing with sinning, and brought em closer to Allah swt. Even tho earthquakes are seen as bad, good can come of it.

"....it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good." (Surah Nisa, 19)

Does that answer your Question

they aint no need to get personal. You cant label all men from pakistan as cheaters just like you cant label British girls as s****ers.

I think this sums it up really well

.......I know the girls inside there wanna get on with the ladies,
But there are always fellas there to stir and make you crazy.......

.....Why do you think that every girl out theres your enemy,
You’re looking at her with the green eyed filled with jealousy
It’s not the way its supposed to be......

MuslimSister — Sun, 2 Dec 2007 - 21:56

I think ones social circles play a part too.

Throughout uni, school and even now - I have yet to come across a group of girls who act more b itchy if guys are around.

I usually see more b itchyness in girls only social events.

I think these wives must have some idea, but because they can't see a way to deal with it they stay quiet and put up with it, hoping he'll change, especially if they have kids. I know loads of girls whose husbands mess them about and they are perfectly aware, but they have no back-up from their family if they were to leave so just stay together. It's so sad. I know a lady who told her daughter when she complained of the way her husband treated her 'look around, all guys are like that. Hardly any woman is happy in her marriage, what makes you so different to not b etreated like that'. 🙁

I know a girl who used to go to the same school as me and she was really hard and loud, but she's a completely different person now because of the way her husband treats her. She's got a young daughter, thinks she'll struggle on her own so just puts up with it.

MuslimSister — Mon, 3 Dec 2007 - 22:49

...And to be honest, one doesnt know what they'll do if they were placed in such a situation.

I was really glad when the lady who found out her husband had an affair, got her own back by beating up the woman he was messing about with, burning his clothes, money and passport and kicking him out the house....but then months down the line she took him back. And to be honest, much as though I hate to admit it - I'd have prob done the same thing (but I wouldnt have it in me to burn his possessions, or to beat up another woman)
