Netherlands: Islamic teacher sacked over hand shake

AMSTERDAM — A Utrecht school wants to sack a female Muslim teacher who refused to shake hands with men.

The Vader Rijn College has sent the teacher a letter of dismissal, breaching an advisory ruling urging against the teacher's sacking.

The teacher had earlier been suspended after she refused to shake hands with men last summer.

The woman citied religious beliefs for her decision, despite the fact she had previously shaken hands with men.

The director of the vocational VMBO school said the Islamic teacher gave a bad example to students.

The Equal Treatment Commission recently issued an advisory ruling granting the teacher the right to refuse a hand shake.

It said the Utrecht school should not sack her for this reason alone.

Comment:

If refusing to shake hands with the opposite sex means that Muslims give a bad example to students then does that mean that we have to participate in Christmas celebrations, go to parties and free-mix, dance and drink alcohol?

Europe is supposed to be a place where people come fleeing persecution because of its history of tollerance and a place where u can practice your religion and express alternative ideas and opinions without fear.

But in recent years Europe is on its way to becoming a place where only the Secular viewpoint is tollerated and any view based upon religion and especially Islam is clamped down upon.

So we see that the western civilisation is in conflict, not with Islam but with its own philosophy, what is Secularism and what is the implementation of it?

Should this woman be sacked or should she not be sacked? This is the dilemma the Secularists are facing as can be seen from the article.

This teacher has been fired...

We live in a free and tolerant society.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

thats just crazy! How is it a bad example to students. Use it as an educational lesson to explain religious and cultural differences to the students so that we can live in a more tolerant society. This is disgusting it's made me so angry.

I cannot shake your hand, sir. I'm a Muslim and you're a man

A Muslim woman police officer has sparked a new debate by refusing to shake hands with Britain's most senior police chief for religious reasons.

The incident happened at a passing-out parade where Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was inspecting a line-up of 200 recruits

In addition to refusing a traditional congratulatory handshake from Sir Ian, the WPC - who wore a traditional Muslim hijab headscarf - also declined to be photographed with him as she did not want the picture used for 'propaganda purposes'.

The woman had earlier insisted that it was contrary to her religious teaching for her to touch a man.

Now The Mail on Sunday has learned that her gesture has sparked top-level discussions at Scotland Yard.

Some officers argue that her attitude towards men might impede her ability to detain offenders.

However, it is clear that she is happy to come into contact with men, just not shake their hand or kiss them.

An inquiry has now been launched and the unidentified WPC - described as 'a non-Asian Muslim' - could face the sack if it is considered that her strict religious beliefs prevent her performing as an effective police officer.

I cant believe that not shaking hands is now being questioned as being a hinderance to ones career.

MuslimSister,

Two issues that seem to matter here:

1. She objected to a handshake with Sir Ian. Senior police officers are asking whether she will be willing to engage with men in the course of an arrest or similar vital duties.

2. She refused to be photographed with Sir Ian on grounds that it would be used for publicity. She must be objecting to a photo promoting the police as inclusive of Muslim women.

While it seems to me that if she is willing to be a police officer she should consider it a duty to accept the tradition of shaking hands at the passing out ceremony, the first objection can be initially settled in discussions and tested with time, and may not warrant the fanfare. The second objection seems political, casting much doubt on her commitment and is an insult to the profession. I don't think this is a normal or fair request to safeguard her religious rights.

The fact that human rights are so sensitive makes incidents like this seem like a backstabbing abuse of trust.

She refused to shake hands when it was not necessary

She refused to promote Sir Ian Blair, not the police force. If she does not approve of him, it would be hypocritical to pretend that all is well.

On its own, fair enough.

I'm also of the opinion thats the reason. As if it serve as a photograph of him kissing babies with 'Sir Ian' rossettes or something.

However Sir Ian Blair could well have been just trying to show that the police force is inclusive of Muslim females.

Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.

Through cheating, stealing, and lying, one may get required results but finally one becomes

Either way her insistence is totally inappropriate.

once again media making big who ha about nothing. oh watch out for the extreme muslim she refuses to shake hands with men hardly the crime of the century. lets continue demonising muslims shall we it is oh so fun whoopee

There is an element of that. Still her situation is interesting. It is her grounds for refusing a photograph alongside the police chief that gives concern. Police service ought to be thoroughly apolitical, which she is not. Requesting not to shake hands is the more understandable issue. Don't ignore the other thing.

Dr Taj Hargey"]Sir – The premeditated snub by an unnamed Muslim policewoman (report January 22) who refused to shake hands with Sir Ian Blair, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, is not endorsed by the transcendent source of Islamic law. There is no passage in the Holy Qur'an prohibiting men and women from offering customary salutations or ordinarily shaking hands.

Like other contemporary distortions of the Islamic faith (including the "obligatory" wearing of the niqab and the unkempt beard for men), these cultural norms are not required by the sacred scripture of Islam. They stem from rigid and archaic theological interpretations of the reputed sayings (hadith) of the Prophet of Islam, most of which were compiled some 250 years after his death, providing sufficient opportunity for fabrication and falsification.

It is high time that British Muslims jettisoned the unthinking form of Islam championed by fanatical Wahhabism and its opportunistic followers in this country.

check out the and fast forward to about 30 minutes, the part where they introduce the Shabina Begum case - Taj Hargey clearly says "Jilbab is a cultural phenomenon".

they are both self-righteous men who do not give much importance to ahadith, personally i don't have time for people who claim to be muslims and then disrespect the Prophet (s.a.w) like that. Hargey is worse though because he acts like he is a scholar and deceives people, he conducts tafseer classes for young muslims when he isn't anywhere near qualified to do so... don't get me started.
