Tinkering and Shennanigans

Salaam

Just thought I may aswell post that it is possible for me not to have access to the site soon.

Decided to mess around with the pc a little. Ended up breaking the bit next to the cpu which holds the heatsink in place. (my pc is ancient, and was swapping the cpu for a less ancient one... up from P3 666 to 1GHZ... for those bored enough to wanna know...)

Now the PC is lying on its side, with the heatsink almost hacked on. well the old, smaller one, as the replacement that actually came with the cpu no longer fits.

But then again, tinkering is cool. Unless things go wrong.

So If I do not post, there is a good chance the PC has gone kaput. (Do not worry, I will post the new revival online even if that happens. The site upgrades may suffer though. But considering I am a far way off, well you should not notice.)

Talking of the site updates, you may wanna see the new vision for the site.

This time I will design it all myself without the 'design by committee' which I tried for the current incarnation. Make it be what I want. Then force it on you lot.

Have a [url=.

I think I have given too much away

I have ideas for the rest of the page, which I do not want to commit yet, as they would be shot down. (I doubt Ed will be happy with what I have planned...)

PS It does not 'work' in Internet explorer at all. Only tested to work with Opera broswer 9.0, and Firefox so far.

You upgraded it to a 1GHZ!...that's ancient aswell. Have you been to pc world lately?

So if your pc goes "kaput" does that mean you won't be able to come on this site and be the 'boss'.

If that is the case then can I be admin when you're fixing your pc? Biggrin

lol P3 1GHz? Bro... you're living in the dark ages. Get something a little more up to date... maybe an athlon or a sempron if youre willing to fork out... which by the sounds of it youre not.

The little preview of the new website you've given is encouraging.

If you do disappear im sure the mods will keep this place ticking over till you get back. That is the chain of command isnt it?

MuslimBro.... PCWorld?? Please... dont make me laugh... they're a bunch of amateurs.

Back in BLACK

I know its the dark ages.

There are two separate issues here.

1. Finances.
2. New processors are too hot. My room is tiny. Even with this cpu, which should take a maximum of 35 watts, I can notice the diference in temperature when the PC is on. Its welcome in winter, but not in summer.

I am planning to get a new rig altogether soon (Even the new core duo CPU's take upto 65 watts though.. the older Pentium 4 can take over 100. The athlons are better at between 65 watts and 90. The mbile ML versions take upto 35, the MT versioned upto 25...). So I thought a quickie upgrade for £13 quid was worth it.

I want something cool, quiet.

The homepage is a bit messed up at the moment, Admin.

I noticed.

Planning on leaving it on as a signature of The revival. Have a new slogan. 'More amatuer than you think!'

What do you think?

Was the site also dopwn for you for a little while?

Oh yeah, it was down for a while.

Good.

Not just me then. Blum 3

btw, you using Firefox, or Internet explorer?

There are currently issues (diferent though) in both browsers!

I can use all IE, Firefox, and, after you talked about it the other day, Opera.

Ahh, I see. The main prob seems to be ony in Firefox.

Yup. No diea what ius wrong though. I have not changed anything!

Opera is nice. and fast. but it just does not work with my surfing habits. Too used to Firefox now. Could not go back to IE at all.

Yes the newer CPUs run hotter but if its getting to the point where its changing you're room temperature (which would be a first) then you should get a new CPU fan or a bigger cooling fan to keep it cool and they're not that loud either.

Brand new an Athlon is like £50.00 but for a few bucks more you can pick up a 64bit cpu.

Im mainly a firefox user as i had a bad experience with IE. Seems to be slight difference in displaying the main webpage.
Are you sure its not a problem with the style sheet? As firefox and IE have been known to interpretate certain CSS parts differently.

All that would do is bnlow the hot air faster into my room! Its a small room.

Its not only the money. as I mentioned.

The error has appeared without me changing the css file. So If its that, then its news to me... (not that there are no css issues altogether...)

I have fixed some of the issues on the front page. I will once again( going with the tradition that I have set...) blame them on 'Ed.

The ie6 issues are more complicated. They should not happen. But sometimes they do. At others they do not. Cannot understand why internet explorer is such a **** browser!

(it takes 20% of the time to get something done correctly. Then 80% to actually make it work with ie! Microsoft has the money. Its about time they fixed the problems in their code!)

As an aside, I am finding my PC to be a little unstable atm... so I am on the lookout for a good deal. pointers would be welcome, as its been a while since I done any pc windowshopping. Nothing blistering in pace or temperature. But cool and quiet. With a nice monitor. The monitor will seal the deal. Probably go for a 19" widescreen 24bit display with 16.7million colours... should be enough:twisted:

I want a prebuilt one. but it does not seem likely that I will find one. too specific my requirements can be.

Got any tips where to look for pre built pc's? I have tried Mesh, Evesham, pcspecialist, dabs savastore, ebuyer and a few other places.

(no point looking at dell. I want quality, and an amd CPU...)

EDIT

Just realised Ed is not gonna be happy to see I still have not put latest issue online!

Aah well, he should be used to it by now!

I built my own pc and man was it headache. I'm not an expert on computers but I know some bits and bobs.

Basically I got most of my parts on ebay. I bought a 3.6GHz processor but my pc was still slow so took it to a technician and after a few days they said there was a problem with one of the rams so bought another ram. I got a 350w power supply with the new parts but that wasn't enough so had to buy a 550w power supply (with neon lights) separately.

In the few weeks I was making my pc, I was soooo stressed out and was in a bad mood and took my frustration out on everyone.

Admin check out [url]. They have a 4GHz amd in stock...if you can afford it

Pentium 4's are an energy hog. take ;loads and loads of power.

That is why I want to go for the Athlon64 3500+. heard good things about it.

Not too hard to build a PC. Built a fair share in my time.

Just want something simple atm really.

And buy buying a readymade PC, there is less of the temptation to pirate the OS... (and since I use my PC for The revival... well I have to try to be whiter than white...)

Still being generous, can I have some opinions? Now it is all tabbed in all three major browsers. (which reminds me, I need to test it with the khtml/webcore engine yet...).

However it now looks less 'pretty'. and in internet explorer the rollover is not working properly... but considering how it looked before, I think its a major improvement.

EDIT -

Keep this topic for the tinkering/PC problems as its a good place for me to ramble on...

I have been nice to it but its not doin the same, if it continues being like this, it's fate will be out the window at a very very hight speed!

How much RAM you got?

On your desktop, right click the my computer icon, go to the advanced tab.

Under performance click settings, then go to the advanced tab again.

At the bottom there will be a section called virtual memory. click change, and increase it to equal the amount of RAM you have.

(the other option is to reduce the amounf of programs you have started at the same time... start>>run and type msconfig, click startup, and unticl any programs that are there for start up. (look at where they are pointing. If they are pointing to a windows directory, or system disrectory, leave them, otherwise turn them off. Next time you restart, your system should be lighter. Just remember to tick the box that comes up, telling it not to remind you on every restart....))

Do i also change the intial size :?

My RAM is 800

You can leave the initial size as is, if the more virtual memory needed sign is not regular, but only when you are doing many things. If its constant, then have it between 200 and 400 megs.

Have the max at 800 (or better experiment from 600 upwards...), and see if that is enough.
