if i ever open the door i tell say to "get lost mum is not at home"

they always make a mess

just coz i dont cook and clean, actually i do clean.......doesnt mean i get it any easier.

we have guests all the time, today the guest from norway is leaving, last summer was from denmark, then we have from pakistan, then my dads mates, then i have my mate around as a guest....he's actually due any time this week.....i have to run around a lot and give up a lot of my own time

but think of it as a blessing and the amount of sawaab one will get

just serving someone food holds great rewards

think of it as good tarbiyat training

loooooool. I sympathise with Lilsis totally. It's the women who have to give up things when relatives come to stay over not the men. So men can hark on about patience, and barakah till the birds come home we won't pay any heed because you men are getting an easy ride.

Most of you get to keep your bedrooms. You don't have to stay at home and make small talk.

You soo conveniently make an excuse to leave the house.

Women can't do this. They have to stay in the kitchen and cook, or at least pretend to look busy coz they're women that's what's expected.

Also clothes it's an inconvience to say the least having to wear hijab all day for weeks in your own home coz you have male guests walking in and out ofrooms without a concern for the privacy of their female hosts! So you cannot relax in your own home. To have that for a few months..gosh i feel sorry for lilsis. I had to do it for a week at a time and that was hard enuff, but months!

P.S most sisters don't care about providing food to their guests their generosity isn't lacking there. It's issues of privacy being violated and a lack of respect i.e using hosts things without obtaining permission...eg walking into my bedroom opening my wardrobe without even asking me :x

exactly

and now that i can drive-i'm used as a taxi driver Cray 2 Cray 2

dont worry this time i'm kicking up a major fuss-i wont let anyone take my bedroom

even if it means dad sleeping on the sofa

poor mum gets the brunt of it as she's home all day-everyone else escapes to uni/work all day long

i agree with that last part ^^, i had a guest round.... an ulama in fact......and his 10 year old went on my pc without asking, and visited porn sites  and then he went in my lil bro's room who was at school, and started playing on the psp :x

besides that....about giving up rooms, i do that a lot....i enjoy it actually, when guests come around, its something different from normal daily life which gets boring.

besides, mosts guests dont stay at your house day and night, unless they are family. they come for a bit....go later...come back in evening sometimes......they understand you have a life as well.

Sirus have you ever thought about having a password on your pc, that way noone can go on your pc without your permission. Also lock up the stuff you don't want other people touching. I got a big locker in my room....I know, I'm stingy.

I've never given up my room for cousins, they better sleep on the sofa or else :x

When guests come round everything goes upside down, few weeks back it was sis's wedin and we had family over. I made it perfectly clear to mum that no kids were going to sleep in my room, I was fine with giving up my four poster bed Sad but not with kids touching my make-up/cosmetics etc, also the furniture in my room is very sensitive I already have a scratch on one of my bed-side tables

I love my room too much hence when I am out of the house it's locked and when I am in the house no kids are allowed fullstop!

mainly i use the pc, or my brothers/sister....so no, no need really

and i dont lock my room.....i hardly have much there, besides ma bed and ma clothes and ma belongings!

im not obsessed with my room, only time i spend there is when im asleep....and i'll be giving it up in next few days again, big deal.........i'll jus sleep on the couch.... Biggrin

I feel sorry for your future kids....

I can't believe you guys are used to doing that...sleeping on the sofa while your cousins sleep in your bed. If that happened to me there would be a big argument.

A few days ago I slept on the sofa (not coz of cousins) and when I woke up my neck was hurting coz of the way my head was positioned on the sofa. I can't imagine myself sleeping on the sofa for two days let alone a few weeks.

"Muslim Bro" wrote:

Well they gona have a room of their own, duh...

I hate kids that ruin your make-up, kids that try eating or chewing your lippy, digging their nails through your eye-shadows, make-up costs....so a bedroom should be a no entry soon for children, they are evil (at times)

I don't mind sleepin on the floor/sofa when I have to, the floor at times can be cool, helps relieve your back pain IMO. I only didn't mind sleepin on floor this time coz my aunt was pregnant so she needed comfy bed.

Angel you're not old but you sound really old, take a chill pill Smile
Kids are kids and they'll be annoying

Hasn't your aunt got her own house & bed...unless you live in an extended family.

It's quite normal amongst asians to give up their beds for their guests. Sleeping on the floor isn't so bad, actually it's comfy more room, and hard floor is good for your back.

when we have guests over-only my brother gives up his bed since my mum is big on "girls and their privacy"

it makes sense-girls cant get dressed without a mirror or get changed for uni/work in the living room

its an unwritten rule that if need arises boys shud always sleep on the sofa

Come to think of it....I'M AN ASIAN. But I've never given up my bed. Noone can separate me from my bed.

I've slept on the floor back home and it was alrite but I've tried the same thing here and was in pain the next morning. So I'll never try it again...

I only have 2 cousins who come to my house about once a month and sleep on the sofa, don't see why I should give up my bed for them...unless I get paid

Angel you have a four poster bed? Wow, thats been my dream bed for so long...

I don't mind guests, but I do find it very difficult to cancel plans and I'm not as generous as I should be with people going down my stuff....I kick up a fuss when my brothers/sisters go down my stuff, so its harder for me to tolerate strangers doing the same...

This is something that I’m not very good at…

Islam stresses the importance of being good hosts.

When people come to my house and I offer then food and they say No…I’ll ask again and if they still say No I’ll leave it.

That’s only cos I know how annoying it is to be forced to eat when you don’t want to eat….But my mum will not let go of a guest until she has forced them to eat (gun on head style)…she’ll empty out her cupboards for guests.

I don’t feel comfortable doing that.

I’m totally fine with entertaining kids/teenagers. But I’m so crap with aunties….I can’t talk to them (partly cos of my terrible Urdu) and also cos I don’t really like the topics they raise. But regardless of what they speak about…I KNOW that being hospitable is obligatory on me.

I know that I should smile and offer aunties samose (even if they’re chatting about so and so’s daughter from number 25)

And whilst we are obliged to be good hosts, guests also should be perfect guests…the type that don’t over stay and don’t inconvenience the family with their silly demands…

How do you entertain YOUR guests (I could do with some tips).

My British upbringing and Pakistani culture makes it very difficult for me to decide what is the right or wrong way to treat guests.

Isn’t it rude to watch TV, read or text people when guests are present?

What do you do when guests start slandering and backbiting people who you are close to? Can you nicely tell them to shut up?

And what do you do when you’re entertaining one set of guests and ANOTHER set of guests turn up?

Is there segregation in your household?

And what according to Islam are the do’s and don’t of being the perfect guest?

Isn’t it rude to come to someone’s house without phoning in advance?

What about when they leave? Pakistani culture is to make people stay when they announce that they have to go...But isnt it wrong to force people to stay-what if they really have to be somewhere?

Share your thoughts…

Wasalaam

Lol thats so funny, don't worry sis im exactly like you i cant entertain guests for shizzer. My urdu and my Punjabi is terrible and i never know what to ask them.

When they come i tend to sneak off but as im getting older that looks really bad and we have about 1 million and 1 cousins, one comes and a day later someelse is here.
I got it bad coz we have so many cousins all living in one small town and when one family or person makes roti (dinner) they invite everyone else. Then it has a domino affect because one famiy made roti the others feel obliged to also make roti and it never ends.

As soon as one rotation has finished they find another occassion (excuse) to make roti again and invite the whole family tree again.

The only thing i cant be bothered with is when i get married im gonna have to get married with her whole family too and expect to go and see people that quite frankly rather not.

Islam is the Key to paradise but without practice it won't open the gates.

Lol-well if your marrying the whole family, it makes sense to visit now and again.

If she's expected to mingle with your family, then you're expected to do the same.

Whatever, I meant I dont allow kids into my room, I don't look the entire house you know.

Also when you spend over 2 grand on your room (which is your own hard-earned money), you do get a little touchy when kids come into your room and wreck things.

"Muslim Bro" wrote:

Lol I aint that generous, she was over for a week for my sister's weding!

MS - Having a 4-poster bed was also my dream and now a reality Smile only coz sis is married now, but I tell you sharing a room is much fun than being on your own Sad I miss her loads..

"Angel" wrote:

I currently share the biggest room in the house with my bro and he is soOoOoOo annoying.

He goes to sleep before me and sometimes I have to hear him snoring away and making funny noises with his mouth in his sleep. I have to get up and slap him to make him stop...for about 10 mins and he starts doing it again. So I have to try and go to sleep in the 10 mins when he's quiet.

And some nights he plays his ps2 while I'm in bed and it's hard to sleep when all you can hear is some guy screaming and being cut open with a chainsaw (not forgetting the bright lights of the tv)

i have to sleep with me sister-EVERY SINGLE night she yells or kicks me and tells me to shut up or to stop playing with my phone or to stop playing with my baby sister or to "get out and sleep on the sofa" cos i make too much noise and she ALWAYS has to get up early

since I never get out of bed before 11-sleeping late aint an issue for me

i wish i had my own room

Don't worry LilSis I feel for you but I have to agree with your sis

Playing with your phone at certain times is annoying for some people. When I'm watching a programme for example & want some peace and quiet my sis starts texting and keeps on the pressing the dam buttons and arggghhhh it's soooo annoying :x

If your sis has to get up early, let her go to sleep first and then go into her room and make some noise. She'll be too tired to shout at you Wink

I also want my own room but hopefully my sis will be moving out next year so I'll have me own room Dirol

we had guests over all evening with naughty kids who just left now

we did eat dinner cos they didnt want any and we couldnt eat in front of them-cos that wud have been rude

and now at this time naturally no one wants to eat spicy indian food just before bed

so we're all going to bed with an empty stomach

guests shudnt over stay their welcome

Yeah tell me about it, the parents can't even control their naughty kids when they're doing something...naughty!

My mum bought these expensive electric powered toy car for my lil bro and my cousin came over without calling and they had 2 lil kids with them and they were so noisy and active. They went into the car without permission and started pulling and twisting anything they could find and I nearly had a heart attack.

LilSis couldn't you take some food upto your bedroom and eat it?
When I've got guests over in my house and can't go into the kitchen, I go to the pfc and eat chicken and chips which keeps me going for a few hours.

I've dropped off my mum and sis's to my cousins house in forest gate and I have the whole house to myself Dirol ...and somehow I've got nothing better to do so came into the forum Lol

I didn't go into my aunts house coz nearly all the people there are girls and the only boys in the house are the lil kids.

"Muslim Bro" wrote:

Talkin of forest gate, this was my first time in London hence first time in that area, bloody hell it's like pakistan. It was a sunday but flippin hell it was soo busy....whilst crossing people would just stick their hand up like a stop sign and the drivers wud stop and let them go, hello whatever happend to waitin at the traffic lights?!

London is a busy place and full of annoyin drivers who dont give u way, London is no place for people who have the patience to give way to others or even people who dont have patience (maybe i am generalising)...but I like glasgow coz at times it gets busy but no where near as London.

lol i love it when guests come over, maybe coz it doesn't happen often. you definitely feel the barakah when guests, and especially kids, are in the house. like yash and angel, i actually don't mind sleeping on the floor in fact i prefer it - as angel said it relieves back pain, and also helps me get up early the next morning. i always feel sorry for my mom though when guests are over, because she's practically in the kitchen all day long. :? guys seriously need to start helping their mums and sisters around the house!

I'm patient depending on my mood. When I'm in a good mood I give away and have a smile on my face Smile but when I'm in a bad mood I don't give away and use my horn often

My sis who's a year and half younger then me is a lemon and really irritating :x . She doesn't help mum and is either in her bedroom or in the living room. I hoover the house and mop the kitchen floor which is not much but it's better than nothing.

There's no way pedestrians can cross Romford Rd esp towards straford end where you were on Sunday.

Generally speaking, in East London, Romford Rd is the worst place to drive...I was stuck there for well over an hour a little while ago, my foot fell asleep cos it was constantly on the clutch moving from 1st to 2nd gear.

Weekends are the worst ...if your ever on Green Street on a Saturday, you can neither walk on the pavement cos of the rush nor drive on the road cos of the traffic jam.

The first line u quoted of mine is regarding pedestrians, second one is regarding drivers ie when you are tying to pull out no car gives u way to do so, comprende?

a few days ago i was crossing on a zebra crossing without looking as usual

it was MY right of way as a pedestrain-this guy had to brake sharpely and called me a stupid woman

i yelled back at him and said "cant u see u stupid man-this is a zebra crossing!!!"

had he put me in hospital i wud have made sure the stupid dog lost his license

You should have took down his reg plate and reported him.

That would have taught him a lesson.

Looks like he needs to learn the highway code specifically under, 'When to stop at a Zebra crossing'.
