How to change behaviour?

Hey Salam Guys,

New member here, so be kind Smile .. um. simple question...

how would you change a negative behaviour that you want to change ?

Salaams New Member.

Habits can be things hard to change.

A bad way to get rid of one bad habit is to replace it with anoither one that is worse, more destructive. But that would be bad advice.

Try to limit the behaviours, surround yourself in god company, try to understand why etc? Some will have causes that can be dealt with.

No idea.

I guess the main thing would be to really absolutely want to change. Other things can change over time on their own though.

Hey You, thanks for that advice, there are deffinately things I will take into account and I do really want to change my behaviours that are negative and destructive..

I think the main issue for me is the people that I am around. I have been on hloliday and I went out of my surroundings and the people I was with... things for me have really come into perspective... I have realised the way I was behaving was detremental for myself and also my faith.. but now I am back into the same situation with the same people... its very difficult...because even though you might be changing your behaviour.. your still involved with the same people and surroundings and will eventually go back into your old habits...

ok... I will pose another question..

If you were surrounded by bad company, how would you change your situation?

all comments are welcome!

My way is probably unhealthy, but I would probably try to avoid those people.

A better way is to somehow get your friends to realise things and become better people too, but that seems like a much tougher ask (and they may abandon you anyway if you ask them to change).

Salaam new member! hope you become a regular and help me in my secret plot of taking over REvival for my own benefit (well we could share) (oh wait...my SECRET plan right?... euh...well... >.>)

anyway. Well. i would pray to God to help me find better friends. I would also pray to help me distance myself from those detrimental friends. I would pray that He gives me the strength to be able to break up form those people and maybe end up by myself for a little while, to be able to stand this loneliness.

ok, thats a lot of praying and a lot of depending on God. (well if you cant depend on Him who are you going to depend on?)

Then i would put into actions all those prayers i made. I would reduce the amount of convos i have with the people who "are bad for me" because most of those convos would be meaningless and therefore wasting my time, but because im so used to talking pointless stuff i dont realise its pointless. So before i have a convo with one of those "people" i would think "what am i going to talk about?" and if i DO start a convo..then inshallah thats when God kicks in and the convo kinda dies coz you've got nothing to tell each other...

am i making sense??

so...you should try and replace the bad people/surrounding with better one but that might be hard to find straight away so you need to be strong enough to end up by yourself for while (maybe) well, hopefully Revival should be able to ease this "gap time" until you find real life "good" people again. (or you could be like me and stay in this "gap" part and not look for real life people, but that is kinda...not good for your health in one way or another..)

apart from me giving random advice and being really hyper (im not like this usually...okay...maybe a little...) i'm going to try and look for some scholarly opinions and i'll get back to you.

maybe i'll think of better advice..until then...Do your best.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Just to add, "wasting time" is not necessarily or always bad.

You need the bits of life to relax, to be happpy, to have fun in order to cope with the more serious bits.

and if you "waste time" and have the intention "to relax to be able to be stronger in your deen" or even better make your relaxation time productive in some religious way and have the intention of it being productive you might just enjoy yourself AND get good deeds

you can get good deeds from SLEEPING if you do it with the right intention, isnt that cool?

edit: btw..i dont REALLY want to take over Revival...i wouldnt do what to do with it...

edit (again): talking about changing behaviour, i hate the fact that when i wake up my first thought isnt God. I wanna change that, any tips/advice?

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

A good time to try and change ourselves is probably ramadan.

The chge of routine can put us out of our comfort zones amd allow us to try to make small changes etc. that inshallah will add up into a wholly better you.

short term goals probably help too - eg why are you wanting to get rid of the bad behaviour, what do you expect to achieve etc.

Not always possible but where they are, each milestona is like a handrail to use for support.
