New EU rules require compulsory labelling of halal meat

Halal and kosher meat will have to be labelled under new European Union rules.

Millions of cows, goats and chickens are slaughtered without stunning each year in the UK under Muslim and Jewish practices, which enjoy an exemption from animal welfare laws.

The RSPCA, other welfare organisations and the Government's veterinary experts say the practice is cruel and should be ended, but another concern is that the meat re-enters the general food chain where it is unwittingly consumed by the general population.

There are people who object to eating Halal meat on the basis that it is cruel to Animals.

Personally, I am not one of them but I know some who do..

Guess it helps them too, but I would suggest that it also helps Muslims as if the labeling have some legal significance, then it has a great chance of being accurate.

I think it is fair enough!

Like when people try to avoid E numbers or certain fats, we provide labeling for them to make an informed choice. But with Muslims it is a little more needed to stick with Halal only food, after all if a company knowingly added pork or something to a supposed Halal product then they are not just misleading - they are committing an attack against that person.

So I see no problems with having the law legislate over this matter. They just need to approve a body who can inspect these companies and provide a logo and a website with further information.

yup and those that wish to willingly avoid halaal meat will be able to do so too.

(I was unaware that such people existed! but apparently this law was originally designed to help them so that they can avoid meats that have been slaughtered or were not stunned.)

Some of these people who avoid Halal meat are the kind of people who join the EDL - bigots. Others just like to ensure their food came from an animal that was stunned, like those who insist on free range chicken..

I had a friend who was like that, until she became a veggie...
