A Chinese proverb

So there I was clicking next on the random phrases thing.

And this came up:

A wise man makes his own decisions, a weak man obeys the public opinion.

- A Chinese proverb.

So...what are your thoughts on that?

I liked it...

Sometimes only a foos will fight public opinion or try to change the status quo... there can be collective wisdom in public opinion.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

But... even when you're 'obeying a public opinion' aren't you making a decision to?

The options are not mutually exclusive, but I think the idea of the proverb is it is better to choose to do somehting because it either is the right thing to do, or because you want to, that to do it because other people want you to do it.

Even then, life is messy and you will need to give and take really. It is more a matter of default policy of who you want to be and what you see yourself as.

Then again, if you are voted into public office, it can be seen as your duty to do whatever the public opinion is...
