Differential Diagnosis [GAME]

This is a lil game me and some friends play, based on the TV Show 'House'. Especially when someone falls ill.
You basically list the patients symptoms and then try to come up with whats wrong with them and possible courses of treatment.
NOTE: NON OF US ARE DOCTORS SO ITS JUST FOR FUN. All my opinions are based on experience, an A-Level in
Biology and ofcourse Google.
Bonus points for anyone who comes out with a House-ism Smile

So grab your bottles of vicodin and lets go to the board:

Patient info: female, aged 24, recently been out of the country (Pakistan) for a period of a month. Got back over a week ago and hasnt been well since.

Symptoms Include:

Temperature,
Feeling sick,

And

Watery Eyes

So what causes a fever, a feeling of sickness and watery eyes???

Go

It has to be lupus.

/reads the symptoms

hayfever?

No, we're wearing the wrong shoes for malaria.

Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.

Unlikely, she had her shots before she went. Plus doesnt explain the watery eyes. Unless ofcourse the two are unrelated and two seperate conditions. However she was innoculated against it.

lol, i think we all know its never lupus. Lupus is a boring diagnosis... plus it doesnt fit the symptoms.
Hayfever would explain the watery eyes assuming theyre two unrelated conditions affecting her and not just one hmm. In which case theres nothing we can do, and she'll just have to get used to having hayfever. But lets assume it isnt that.

hmmmmm, you know, when the Inuit go fishing, they don't look for fish. They look for the blue heron, because there's no way to see the fish. But if there's fish, there's gonna be birds fishing. Now, if shes gota fever, what else are we gonna see circling overhead?

The temperature and feeling sick sounds like toxins in the body and the watery eyes sounds like a reaction to something. I don't think its anything viral or fungal, probably bacterial. This may have caused the patient's lymph system to become a little hypersensitive and the eyes decided to jump on the G20-protest-band-wagon.

As for the blue heron, look closer at they eyes. Are they an unrelated symptom or another avenue that the disease is going down?

Suddenly, I no longer want to be any thing like a doctor.

OFCOURSE i know what Lupus is... wat a horrible thing to say.

(besides i thought we got rid of you?)

now! now Kids! lets play nice! don't be nasty! Smile

Who is the cat of the Forum? MEZ!
Your damn right!

but but but House IS nasty, and sometimes or in his case all the time u gota be nasty to be nice and to get things done! Smile

Well i thought your comment was horrible. If you really knew what SLE was and how it affects a person then you wouldnt have called it i quote "a boring diagnosis".

Im assuming (but i could be wrong) that your ignorant opinion is based on a stupid American medical drama. Please do enlighten me, im intrigued to know.

ps you dont get rid of me that quick

Its more the phrase is based on that tv show rather than the opinion. Any disease can be a bad thing, but some diagnosis may be easier or harder than others.

And don't tell me you're not a fan of House? The guy is obnoxious and always puts everyone down. What's not to like?

Of course i like House and anyone who doesnt needs their head examining but thats not the point.

I found his comment insensitive. My lil bro has SLE and it took the doctors 7 years to diagnosis him. There is no cure for SLE, its controlled by medication. The only medication that is controlling the SLE for him at the moment is steroids!

In future when he makes a comment he should watch which phrases he is using.

Well im sorry for insulting your speciality... oh wait no im not. There are millions of people that suffer from Lupus. You only give a crap coz you happen to be close to one.
So im supposed to tip-toe around you and trying to fake being all good, decent and caring. Bcoz if im mean to you, you'll be mean to me. Mutually assured destruction.

People get sick, happens all the time. Its never pretty and theres never any justification for it.
Get over it.
This is a game thread... the hint is in the title. Its all for funsys. So you leave the seriousness at the door.

If you cant handle that then your really in the wrong profession coz remaining objective is CLEARLY not your strong suit.

You cant just dismiss viral and fungal... your not me!

Viral and bacteria fit better. However anti-biotics would have fixed any rogue bacteria. Which means its bacteria's much more cleverer cousin. A virus.

Watery eyes could be a separate symptom entirely... hmm

Examination of the eyes reveal the patient has hazel eyes, but since this is diagnostically irrelevant we're not back to square one. Unless... {gets up and walks out of the room}

@ Seraphim - not cool. No need to be the wolf and escalate things (not that I don't do the same myself). You're not supposed to tiptoe, but acknowledge that some comments may have more of an effect on some people than others.

(I still don't really know how badly it affects quality of life, but it seems to be very serious.)

do not treat for lupus! that's steroids and it'll tank her immune system and the infection will do more damage.

run a blood panel to see check for infection.

also scan her brain for hypothalmic disregulation. could be causing her tear ducts to overproduce and messing with her temperature.

or maybe it's just an allergic reaction. possibly reaction to shots she took before going to pakistan? do a scratch test.

I say off with the head. Then none of the symptoms will matter anymore...

You see what i did there I-m so happy i was being House.

Case solved. Virus plus allergies explains all the symptoms.
It fits. And now shes better Wink

I liked House when he was in Blackadder better.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

Mr BEEEEEEEEANN!

Urgh. Can't stand him ¬_¬

Do't mind Rowan Atkinson though ^_^

Not a fan of Mr Bean, or most of Rowan Atkinson's characters. They have this level of patheticness that is really off putting.

You obviously haven't seen Blackadder then.

But I wasn't even talking about him, I was talking about House being in it! And acting rather differently to how he does now.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

What was his underling in it called? the one that was always encased in mud?

There is always a patheticness in him or surrounding characters.

malaria doesnt cause watery eyes. i say this could be a simple alergy that she used steroids to control weakening her imune system and leaving her open to a minor infection picked up in her travels lots of time spent on a plane and again alegy for the wattery eyes or maybe bad contacts we need a better history and everybody lies

thank u we need a detailed history, i love house but this is no 5 on the complexity scale just cause u like a show doesnt mean u dont have to be un-biased just cause he does doesnt mean we should throw this out of proportion
