You assume too much.
Rawry was right, I was just using it as an example.

Re: What's the point of life?!
ok, an opposing stance on all this:
Woody Allen. I have heard he was a really good Movie maker. Top of his game. Absolutely hilarious. Til he lost his mojo about 20 years ago. Since then he has struggled on trying to find the spark he had, making average films etc, ruining his earlier reputation.
Robert Mugabe, defender of his people. He gave his country freedom, greatness. and then watched/forced it to crumble where there is not extreme poverty and hunger. Not many live beyond their early 30's.
So, the question is if dying before you reach your peak is a tragedy, is living after you reach it a catastrophe?
Re: What's the point of life?!
Purpose of life for me is to give back, better myself, achieve set goals, make a difference...not for anyone else other than myself and God...
And it helps if one meets companions along the way that help them to achieve their purpose of life..
One cant do much without the right company.
But generally speaking, cos everyones different, naturally their purpose of life will differ too..

Very selfish purpose of life being expressed there.
Re: What's the point of life?!
Is there anything wrong with selfishness? I don't think so. (Selflesness on the other hand... it has its flaws. You should not have to be a martyr for everyone else.)
Re: What's the point of life?!
Do u think people can be truly selfless?
Im not sure :S
Re: What's the point of life?!
Yes they can. IMO.
(I would add "I pity the fools" to the end, but that may be taken too seriously.)
Re: What's the point of life?!
Yeah, being selfless is a beautiful thing. I wish I was a LOT more selfless than I am..
And it's true...my purpose of life is very much about how it makes me feel.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain?
Re: What's the point of life?!
Kind of like that but it is not always as extreme. How many (famous) people do you know of who have gracefully handled being past their peak? For me, only one comes to mind - Muhammad Ali.
With most others it can be almost painful - watching people watch what they created crumble to dust infront of their very eyes. Its like the death throngs of the T1000 at the end of Terminator 2 after it falls into the molten metal. It's almost unnatural, kind of like watching parents having to bury their children instead of the other way around.
And as you mentioned, it can be much much worse if it affects others. In the case of Mugabe - a decade ago he would have died as the people champion and he is not the only case.
Re: What's the point of life?!
Correction: You're never self-less especially if you believe in heaven.
I dunno...I think theres one thing u can do which really is self-less...make duaa for others. I say that cuz even though ur not directly helping anyone or anything, to me duaa is very important and i do it even for the smallest of reasons and i do it when im out of control of a situation.
So i may not be able to help the poor, the ill, the misguided and others but Allah(swt) can and id like to think my duaas will help them therefore i am helping them but if i didnt do duaa for people it would make no difference to me and by doing the duaa it makes no difference to me either.
I really do do it just for the sake of it - unless someones specificly asks me then its for their sake lol 🙂
(i hope u dont think im boasting or anything, its just the only example i could think of and i cant really do the explaining in like the third person lol :|)
does that make sense? :|
Re: What's the point of life?!
Yeah, being selfless is a beautiful thing. I wish I was a LOT more selfless than I am..
If you truly were selfish, you wouldn't feel it. its all a part of the game - selfless people are the ones that see the need for more selflessness.
And it's true...my purpose of life is very much about how it makes me feel.
And that is IMO a good thing. Noble and honourable even.
Correction: You're never self-less especially if you believe in heaven.
Disagree. If you have a pie in front of you and someone else who wants it, would you think "I am trying to earn paradise, so let the other person have it" or "That person looks hungry"?
Re: What's the point of life?!
Is that the same question as what is the Purpose of life?
I don't understand how life can have a meaning...
Like say the meaning of drinking is to quench thirst
So are you asking what the meaning of living is? And therefore the Purpose of living?
Re: What's the point of life?!
Everything has a story. The question is what do you want your story to be?
Re: What's the point of life?!
Making du'aa itself is not self-less and it's not selfish either... it comes under prayer, ease in this life and hereafter. Allah willing of course.
:/ ok, In that case i dont believe anyone can be truly selfless.
Hey thanks to all the guys who ddnt just go for the "religious path" cuz u made me realise i was being a "giver up-er" (im sure theres a better word for that :|).
🙂
Re: What's the point of life?!
Ofcourse you can be truly selfless - when you give up something where it makes you feel crap too, but it is the right thing to do.
Like someone once argued on the interwebs that a true vegetarian is not a vegetarian because he/she disliked meat, but that they do like it, but avoid it due to ethical concerns and really do feel the loss of not eating meat.
(Does that make any sense?)
Re: What's the point of life?!
(yeah it makes sense)
but by doign that they feel like theyre doing the right thing and it must make them feel good - even if they dnt go boasting about it, they still feel it so its not completely self-less. if u get what i mean
Re: What's the point of life?!
Doing the right thing can make you feel like crap.
Re: What's the point of life?!
I know, but in the end its worth it. 🙂
Re: What's the point of life?!
Not always. But its right.
Re: What's the point of life?!
Doing the right thing, doesnt always mean things will fall in your favour. Nor does it mean it will be easy.
Re: What's the point of life?!
Thus a person can truly be selfless.
Re: What's the point of life?!
The only chance to be alive
Re: What's the point of life?!
Disagree with that. To be alive you need to be at least slightly selfish IMO.
It's not a good idea to be the doormat everyone wipes their feet on.
And even if you want to ultimately help others, you need to take care of yourself first, build yourself up to the stage so that you can do it properly, otherwise things may go awry.
Re: What's the point of life?!
Think it was miss understood due to my breaf writing, By "alive" I ment allways conected with their Creater!

But still, forget about me. Just think about it hypothetically... Imagine someone who's literally useless, no purpose anywhere to anyone.
Now is there no point to their life?
to worship Allah (swt)?
we haven't been placed in dunya to serve others. we have been placed in dunya to worship Allah (swt), to obey his beloved Rasul ﷺ and to follow the teachings of islam.
But isnt there a number of ways you can actually do that? Ibaadat i mean.
