A girl is always chosen based on how fair and slim she is. She is not allowed to speak to the boy and if she is her entire clan watches her. She is judged only on her looks, cooking skills and how obedient she is.
Comparing it to legalised prostituition is a bit much but its along the same line which is exploitation of women.

and a prostitute is judged on value for money.

where is the similarity?

If two people do not have the ability to be corteous and polite infront of others, with watchers it'll probably result in murder!

Besides its not a one way street. A girl is not always chosen. She has the right to choose aswell.

Noiw lets say in a western love marriage, how would a partner be chosen? by the chatup line? by how intoxicated you are? or on looks, followed by personality?

(and noone will talk to someone who's appearance they detest, unless they have to. Personality will not come into it.)

A girl can only be exploited if she allows herself to be exploited.

You said you kicked up a fuss to live on campus in Uni...why don't you kick up a fuss regarding this issue?

If you don't like doing the whole bring the tea thing in all dressed up..then refuse to go along with it.

Refuse to see people whom you think are only judging you on your "looks, cooking skills and how obedient you are"....however, do give the families a chance.

And if do feel pressured to go ahead such meetings...just relax a bit and don't take them seriously, I personally find the whole thing amusing.

yeh it is a bit much, it aint even in the same ball park, i mean it aint even the same sport , there two completly different things.

and as far as i knew the girl has a choice

a guy is also chosen on looks , no one will say yes to a guy they find ugly will they :? , aswell as that guys are expected to be educated and have a good job

and the guy also isnt allowed to speak to her unless this clan is watching

the only way i guess that makes the girl exploited is if she has no choice , which is a different issue, and its not only girls who sometimes get forced into marriage , i know of guys who have had to get married to gilrs they didnt want to due to peer pressure and family and what have you

I dont like this westernised stereotypical view women in islam are repressed and exploited, under islam the system is fair and just , its jus that culture and backwardness of paki mentality mess it up
