Years ago my friend decided to empty out her purse to some homeless guy.

Unfortunatley for him, only pennies fell out of my friends purse. So he threw them back at her.

She told him that 'beggers cant be choosers'. :?

We were in college at that time and found the incident hilarious.

But today it makes me think...is it wrong to give a homeless person less than a £1?

A (homeless) guy in the mosque asked me for 20p to make a phonecall. I gave a pound cos thats all i had on me. now he always tries to pay me back, 20p at a time. I've tried telling him that he doesn't need to, that its a gift etc, but he is insistent.

Its made me realise that £1 is actually quite a lot of money, he's been paying me back for days now. I kinda don't want him to, but I realise he doesn't want any debts on the Day of Judgement

but you let him have the quid.... would that still count as a debt bcoz he originally asked for 20p?

i thought it would count as sadaqah or even a gift, cos i told him not to give it back many times.

Apparently my wife has been packing lunches for homeless people and taking them down to the soup kitchen with the girls.

I dunno what to think about this. On the one hand I think it's a great idea to start them young, on the other hand there are some serious security questions as far as I'm concerned.

I told her it was okay so long as her driver sticks with her.

Does that make me "hobophobic" - no pun intended. But seriously, I'm willing to give anybody a chance. Provided I don't think they have the potential to harm my wife or kids... in that case I'm not just suspicious I'm downright bigoted.

It isn't about giving anybody a chance, it's sorting people out with some food. Good for Annette!

Sure, your concern for your wife's wellbeing is impressive and I'm sure it's a good arrangement. No criticism intended. I was just a bit jealous that you have drivers.

Its fantastic that your wife feels an obligation to the community. I strongly believe that its SO important to 'give back'.

Not everyone is blessed with this inclination.

To me, nothing is more frustrating than a social problem in society.....and society turning a blind eye to it.

In the Muslim community, there are not enough organisations catering for all of the unique and serious social problems in society.
