Racism - Paki?

Jap is short for Japanese. :?

There are racist terms for them, (just can't think of any atm) but Jap?

It is all about usage. if it is meant in an offensive way, i will cause offense.

If it is not, then it will not.

Unless the main or original connotation as offensive, so people may find it offensive even in casual use.

Well so is "PAKI" short for Pakistani !!!!!!!!!

I personally do not find being referred to as a "Paki" offensive !!!!...But as "Admin" implied, depends on intention of saying such an abbreviation !

It really depends on the context in which is it said. If some drunk lout turns around and shouts 'Oy Paki! F*** Off back to your own country!' then i think its a bit obvious.

So context and circumstances.

Shortening a term is nto always offensive.

Besides Paki when used in an offensive manner is not used just for Pakistani's, but anyone who has origins in pakistan/India/Bangladesh.

I am not aware of Jap ever being used as an offensive term.

The fact that someone has made a post relating their thoughts on the word shows us that it has the ability to cause offense..

Perhaps it would be wiser to refrain from using such terms.. there are a lot more words in the English language we could use instead 😉

p.s. i dont think Admin said it with racist connotations in mind - i mean, he WAS promoting their funky sofa, right? 8)

Wel if Prince Phillip wasn't labelled a racist and arrested for calling them 'people with slitty eyes' then i doubt admin can be held to account for 'japs'... 😉

I wonder; do english people dislike being called whities? Was reading an article in the paper this moring about some study and it refered to english people as whities.

Whitie just sounds wrong. I would not use it, as it is a little 'simple' and has no real meaning.

The fairest skinned people (apart from albino's) I have personally seen come from the Kashmir region. not all of them (most look well... normal), but some are a little too fair coloured.

The term 'Paki' became offensive in the 60's when the English British people started to refer to immigrants in a racist manner and called them Pakis'.

This was before our time, so many of us dont see a problem with it...also, many pakistani's have reclaimed this term and refer to each other...or people who were born in Pakistan as a 'paki'.

Because of the racial connotations that are attached to this term...I wouldnt recommend non-Pakistani people to refer to Pakistani's as 'Paki's....people do take offence.

I don't like to hear non-Pakistanis using that word. Seems it's acceptable when it comes to cricket, otherwise it's racist or at least pretty ignorant.

well it depends on circumstances i think something can only be racist if someone takes it as being racist with a justified reason cuz i hve loads non-pakistani mates who say it n di dnt tke offense but wudnt dare say it in front of others neither wud i say da word gorah even as a joke cuz it simply isnt acceptable

I totally disagree with racism it is against islam. We should not be racist to any body what ever religion or culture they are. I have heard the word "paki" in a lot of places. Although I'm not a pakistani my self I still disagree with racism. I see racist people every day when I come out of school. The area my school is, is very racist. All I see when I get out of my school is white boys and girls throwing stones at us because we are against racism. And we stik up for the people that are actually getting bullied. Some times we react because they call us "refugee muslims" so we try to hit them back. But they're to strong. Some times they come out with weapons like blow torches and hammers. Whilst we're at the bus stop. Some times we have police around the area sometimes we don't. Some of my friends are determined to rob hammers from the design and technology block to protect them selves when the racist people come to attack us.

When I was in secondary school, the boys in year 11 had lots of fights. Mainly because of the different areas they used to live in and they were always fighting each other to show who was the 'toughest'. It's a bit weird because both areas were mainly asian muslims. No-one from one area would go into the other without taking a few of their mates with them. And yes, the hammer was a very popular weapon, and when the police arrived they used to hide the hammers under vehicles parked beside the road.

Does anyone listen to a radio station called LBC, they had a discussion a few days ago about whether the word paki was racist.

Jap is racist on this side of the pond - Paki is descriptive. At the end of the day they were both descriptive to start, but they were used derogatively at various points in anglophonic history (WW2 USA for Jap and post war Britain for Paki) and that gives them a racist character.

I was not originally aware that it had been used in a derogatory manner.

i think the cleverest thing to do is not to use these terms at all full stop ok that way we are not able to justify these terms because someone will find it offensive and that is when it becomes racist its the sam with black people and the N word which i will not use same with pakistanis and the P word hich again i will not use eventually it will be deemed as highly racist
