Tests have confirmed that the dog which killed a five-year-old girl on Merseyside was a prohibited pit bull terrier type.
Ellie Lawrenson died of severe head and neck injuries after being mauled at her grandmother's house in St Helens.
Ellie's family, who described her as "little angel", laid flowers outside the house on Tuesday night.
Merseyside Police said they were aware of two previous complaints about the dog.
They said a letter was sent to the owner when the dog bit another dog and a second when a complaint was made about noise.
It was shot dead by a police marksman following the attack.
The 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act imposed conditions on the ownership of four types of dog.
Lord Baker, who introduced the act when he was Home Secretary, said it was intended to get rid of pit bull terriers from the UK.

It's survival instinct. Built into the DNA.
Afterall you don't see people petting a shark or crocodile...
and not many people keep snakes as pets either.
Now having a venomous snake fopr 'security'... could have potential... but would it know friend from foe? would either be friend, or just food?
Hmmm....
/ponder over philosophical point

I dislike the idea of pets, they can be unhygienic and some dogs are nasty and I just don't see the point of purchasing useless animals and looking after them (or claiming to do so). Rescued animals are a fair exception.
Big dogs especially should be kept far from a dinner table. My cousin has a huge dog that gets under the table, starts pawing everyone and heavy breathing in faces and food. Rank. And it slobbers. But it is inaccurate to say all dogs are dangerous if by that we mean violent (Snoopz). Tiny ones are cute and harmless enough.
People who keep dangerous pets without following the laws on registration are selfish idiots. What happened to this girl is a horrific case in point, and the news is presently full of alarming statistics on violent dogs, that should be well heeded.
Using dogs for security is also a disgusting practise.
Laws on dogs are probably adequate but not enforced. Probably in addition to the careless louts a lot of kindly dog-lovers are cutting corners. A simple rash of fines might help.

but the question is....................ISLAMICALLY ARE WE ALLOWED TO HAVE PET DOG??? ARE WE EVEN ALLOWED TO TOUCH THEM?? COZ FROM A SMALL AGE WE WERE TOLD NEVER TO TOUCH A DOG!!!

Did you know that hitting a dog is similar to hitting a human in british law?
If you hit a police dog, it is a assaulting an officer. If you hit a dog and drive off, it is hit & run.
The saliva of any animal that eats meat is either haraam or makrooh (can someone clear this uyp for me?). So if it gets onto you or your clothes you have to wash them before you cna do anything 'Islamic'.

How do you fend off a dangerous dog?
KEY TIPS:
- No sudden movements
- Put hands in pockets
- Avoid eye contact
- Back away but do not run away
- Children can accidentally provoke a dog
- Never try to break up two fighting dogs

That isn't how to fend off a dog, it is how to avoid provocation. If you're under attack from a dangerous dog and forced to respond, bop it on the nose.

All dog owners like to think that their pet can sense their mood and emotions. Although researchers now accept that dogs, and other non-human animals, can experience primary emotions such as anxiety, fear, and anger, they still do not accept that βanimalsβ have a sense of self and are capable of sophisticated secondary emotions. Instead, the scientists believe that non-human animals are incapable of understanding the feelings of others around them. Without a sense of self, they say, secondary emotions, like jealousy (he's enjoying that β¦ but I would enjoy more) or empathy (what a terrible situation that person/other dog is in) are impossible.

You cannot change an animals nature. You may be able to control it most of the time, but you cannot change it.
Alot of animals will not attack anything bigger than them though, unless they are in a pack.

We dont hate dogs we just dislike them. They're are very dirty for starters, not allowed in the house Islamically (see link posted above), they bark like mad, poo all over the place and so on. Actually one dog chased me, it was well scary and one bit my nan on her leg and now shes got a massive, ugly scar. I think it's a culture thing and the way pakis are brought up, if they see their mum running away from one when there little they're obviosuly gona follow in their footsteps. O yeah did anyone do the sponsored walk? I hated it! Dogs everywhere!

I agree...these stories are getting very common. I think it's so sad..the girl was so sweet.
My cousin has a pit bull and to be honest it looks disgusting...they look so nasty and fierce..why would anyone want a pet like that????
I think it's about time the law on this became a lilttle more strict!!! How many more kids are going to die because of a mad dog??
