Today I was told that I was hypocritical, was amazed at the person's stupidity as to how she came to that conclusion, some people really need to think before they speak rubbish.

It didn't annoy me as much to be called a hypocrite just the lack of knowledge she had in regards to what she was talking about, argh!!

Got to hand in my firsy blooody assinment tmmrw!!!! and i've only just startedd!!

School are big on cross-curricular links which basically means that you should teach one topic, but you should make it interesting, enjoyable and relevant by making it link to all other subjects in schools.

I have to do that…SO, I’ve decided that, I’ll teach a class of year 5 students about Islam in RE.

In Art they can make a prayer mat and /or Kaba using paper mache…or paint some of the famous historical Mosques around the world.

In History they can learn about pre-Islamic Arabia.

For their class trip they can visit Regents Park Mosque.

For music I’ll introduce them to the Qasidah…in Arabic

In PE I’ll teach them how to do “dervish dancing” (that’ll be fun as there’s a section in the Dance PE National Curriculum that states that pupils must know how to move in “circular movements”.

But…I’m stuck on what to do with them in English, Maths, Science and ICT…

Can anyone think of anything relating to Islam that can be done with kids in the above core subjects...?

for maths
as the muslims arabs were teh founders of algerbra u cud go into teh history of the arabs mathmatics ... altho i guess it cud easliy turn into a history lesson were teh kids will get easliy sidetracked. . :roll: .

For ICT you can get them to look up info/pics relating to Islam and get them to copy paste them onto a word document and write a little something on what they found.....get them to draw something on clip art, like a mosque and things relating to the 5 pillars of Islam. (having said that i aint a clue bout ICT much so I don't know if that would even be part of ICT).

For science you can take things out of the Quran and break it down and introduce islamic figures that have been in the field of science and the importance of science in Islam....What age group are you teaching?

As for your idea of dervish dancing, it's wicked 😃 (can i come to P.E. classes please 😛 lol)

Yesterday in "Dance/PE" class we were being taught..."circular movements/making yourself dizzy" etc which is actually part of the National Curriculum....it made me think of dervish dancing. 😃

I was thinking of showing them a clip on DVD, giving them a brief explanation behind it and then getting them to copy it...

It was either that or the Hadra 😃

For english, well for the lit part u can look at islamic poetry..
how the world came into exsitnce 4 science.. big bang and stuff..
and maths.. hmmm not sure...

why dnt u get the kidz to look into the Quran and study it the mathmatical term... like the word "hell" is mentiond so many times and its opposite word "women" is mentiond the same amount of times... then maybe they cud look into that.. actually that mite be a lil to hard.

What age group u teaching sis?

Or u can make the kidz work out how many muslims converting each year.. month and make them do a report on it and make them draw graphs and barcharts.. like in sptmber so many muslims convertd bla bla...

You guys have REALLY helped me out. I'm going to go with GenieSis's idea for my maths lesson....cos I can also link it to ICT by making them present the info on graphs/pie charts etc on the computer.

bt i think i wrote something like this

u cud draw up a survey about teh muslim population see how many muslims they are of different backgrounds around teh world ,uk or even in ur presentt city then once they in drawn them up in a some sort of chart and then make analysis of them

or even to get a group of teh kids and go outside and then to tally off the different types of peopel that walk past eg muslims non muslims non muslims , asians people white people black peopel.
once they are draw in into a chart i think the observation of teh graph will be quite intresting and to quite some benefit to the kids as tehy will have an insight on the different kind of peopel living in their community.
it sounds all exciting what u are planning sis .. i might just follow in ur footsteps and become a teacher. 🙂

no beast i dont think u understand wt i said
if u read carefully i said that they can tally off the different kinds of peopel eg muslism non mulims etc that wlk past them they do all this from OBSERVATION and then frm their tally chart they cn produce graphs..........

Encouraging children to make judgements about someone's religion based on their appearence (and possibly colour) and getting them to make racial distinctions?

Doesn't that encourage stereotyping and prejudice?

Just get them to do a bit of algebra instead. Make them use Arabic letters.

brother i still dont think u get me i'v just suggested that thy can make no judgement but just look at teh different kinds of people living in their comminuty nothing more .. as when i was little in primary school we went out as a class and we did a survey and from our graphs we found out that our community was a very mixed community we were all very happy !

yes but tallying and appylying data to graph is part of algebra.. well in the algebra i was taught it was most defiently

Getting children to see people in terms of their colour is not a good idea. It serves very little purpose - esp if it's just to do a graph.

Determining someone's religion just by looking at them presents further problems.

How would a child determine who is a Muslim? Someobody who is brown and has a beard/wears a headscarf? But not all Muslims have beards and wear headscarfs. Not all Muslims are brown. Not all non-brown people who have beards are Muslims.

How would a child diffrentiate between a Sikh and a Hindu? Not all Sikhs wear turbans. Not all Hindus are either bald or have really long hair. How would he/she spot an athiest?

For some, if not most, of the children it will just be an opportunity to put into practice some of their own naive stereotypes. Muslims have beards, white people are Christians, people with squinty eyes are Chinese, etc etc. (Note how I'm making massive generalisations just trying to explain this.)

Unless of course the purpose of the survey is to show that we can't make judgements about people just from the way they look...

I wasnt looking to get that into it...

I'd prob just make them visit all the classes in their school and do a small survey asking how many kids are Muslims...

Why would you do that?

So that next time there's a terrorist attack the bullies will know who the Muslims are?

There's no need for schoolchildren to do any surveys which define people in terms of their race or religion.

Name, and/or headscarf, not eating in Ramadan etc gives it away anyway.

One cant hide their faith, and shouldnt anyway.

I was looking at someones homework recently (first year if secondary school) and she had homework to calculate wether numbers were happy or sad!

That is NOT maths!

if that were not bad enough it was very tedious.

A happy number is one were you square each digit, add it togetther, square each digit again, add it together and keep doing that until the final result is 1.

a Sad number being one that does no result in one.

She had to do this WITH EVERY NUMBER FROM 1 TO 50! I call that torture. It teaches nothing but how to live with tedium.

A massive waste of time.

(that was one question of the homework Another was to do a similar thing to find the sly numbers, and the straight numbers. and it just went on and on.)

If they call that maths, no wonder everyone finds it boring.

(before anyone jumps on me, even real useful maths is normally boring!)

Sad, happy, sly numbers etc helps you remember important, yet boring concepts such as odd, even, infinite, square numbers, irrational numbers etc

It makes boring maths fun...

but doing it for every number from 1 to 50 is overkill IMO.
