There are two extremes.
Those who blame everything bad on black magic or nazar or bandish or whatever.
Those who think its extremely rare and hardly ever happens.
The middle path is that some of these dark arts are infact very common - viz Nazar/evil eye, hasad/envy are extremely common and its my belief that much of what happens to pious believers is the result of others evil eye/envy.
On the other hand black magic/bandish/sihr I also believe happens but not as freely and as commonly as evil eye.
An explanation is that evil eye can even be caste from a person on himself without being awares - its when a person either gazes at something with some dark feeling in his heart - even if its staring at yrself in a mirror - Shaytaan Mardood uses the evil in that gaze to cause harm.
Sihr/Black magic on the other hand requires active involvement and hence is less common but more dangerous than the other types of dark arts.
Alhamdulillah the biggest proof of this thing existing AND being a real issue is that the Surah Falaq and Surah Nas were revealed SPECIFICALLY as cures and preventatives to the dark arts. The Holy Quran is the Eternal Non-Created Speech of ALLAH and its relevance and truthfulness is for all times and places - this is our aqeedah as a necessity. Hence even by logic we have to accept that this is an issue that happens in our lives and we must take steps to guard against it.
Not denying the existence of Black Magic. Afterall it has been done to prolific Muslims in history as you mentioned.
But I have seen too many 'scholars' be too quick to say its that. I knew someone who ran away from home. A scholar said its magic. Later on it was found out he owed someone a lot of money.
PS suspicion is not a good trait...
well said
i too kno of too many people who are quick to condemn everything as black magic
this makes ppl suspicious of one another
also-many people cover up their faults/familys faults n shortcomings as the "nazar" or "jadu" of others on them
maybe they think they're blessed with knowldge of the unseen

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.
Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.
Some specialists say that even if you recite surah falaq/naas and recommended verses sihr can still effect someone and these specialists prescribe particular recitations known as wazeefas which sometimes have to be done with permission.

People do different forms of sihr and different forms require different treatments.
Its like Hadrat Madani rahimahullah was diagnosed as having had sihr done on him. Its initial action was countered by the Aamileen but then the ones who had it done worked a stronger and more potent form on him and this contributed heavily to his final illness. May ALLAh have mercy on him - ameen.

asalamu alaikum warahmtullhi wabaraktuhu,
In order to do some magic usually the name of the
victim can be sufficient although i have heard that
some may ask for a photo or object i.e a comb.
When the prophet (salalhu alaihi wasaalim)
was placed under a spell it was done with the comb
he used.
