Heard an alim tell a story about this subject the other day. He said it was a famous story/joke. It was in Urdu so I'll paraphrase.

A long time ago a boy got stuck up a date tree. The people from the village gathered round and wondered how they were going to get him down. They kept telling the boy to slowly climb down but he was too scared. Soon the villagers became really worried - if the boy fell he would have died.

One of the villagers said that they should go to the oldest man in the village and ask him what to do. They went to the old man and told him that a boy was stuck up a date tree. The old man thought about the situation for a while. He then told the villagers to fetch a rope. The villagers brought the rope and were told to tie it around the waist of the boy.

The villagers did just that. Don't know how they did it seeing as he was stuck up a tree - I probably got distracted a this point. Anyway, once the rope was tied around the boy the old man told each of the villagers to grab one end of the rope and yank it towards them.

The villagers did just that. The boy was pulled out of the tree and fell to the ground and died. The villagers looked at the old man and asked him why he had had told them to do that - they wanted to save the boy not kill him. The old man replied 'don't look at me. This is what we used to do whenever someone was stuck down the well. We'd throw a rope down to him, get it tied around his waist and pull. I don't know why it didn't work here.'

Moral of the story, the alim said, was that children in Pakistan are stuck down a well and children in UK are stuck up a tree. We need different solutions in each case.

The alim's soundbite for his little talk was:

I supose the only example that comes to mind could be, when one knows he is bad ie sinner and knows that if he repents from his sins and asks for forgiveness Allah (swt) will indeed forgive him. Hence when one knows himself truly he knows the blessings of Allah (swt) truly.
