"The Omen," the remake of the 1976 film about the coming of the Antichrist, opens on Tuesday. But Tuesday is not just any day. It is June 6, 2006, or 6-6-6, appearing in the Bible's Book of Revelations as "The Mark of the Beast," a symbol of evil  .

The arrival of the once-in-a-century date has more than a few people wondering about its relevance to our modern society. Will it mark an enormous event, maybe even the Apocalypse?

For those of you who havent seen the original, the basic storyline is as follows: An ambassador to the US adopts a baby boy when his wife gives birth to a stillborn child. A few years later and a number of mysterious deaths start to occur some of which include the childs nanny hanging herself and a priest killed in a freak accident. It turns out the child is the son of Satan who is destinied to bring about the End of Days.

Islam refers to the anti-christ as the Dajjal who will raise an army to destroy mankind but will also be defeated by the second coming of Jesus (pbuh) and Imam Mahdi.

The film has caused much controvercy for the church not long after they're call to boy-cott another film ('The Da Vinci Code') as they believe it distorted the true vision of Christianity.

"Reports in overseas media suggest the prospect of giving birth on June 6 has prompted talk of spawning devil children, with many pregnant women who are due around the time ruling out the name Damien if the baby is a boy and others planning induced births to avoid having their child on the day. But Richard Leonard, a Jesuit priest and the director of the Australian Catholic Film Office, has urged parents who have a son born on the 6/6/06 to defy superstition and christen their child Damien if they wish."

But should Muslims stay away from this film for the same reasons? Or is it another reminder of the truth behind the coming apocolypse?

Should we as muslim boycott this film or treat it like any other film?

I haven't voted yet because I'm stuck in between. I think Muslims should boycott the film but I don't think 'its scary and stuff'.

Anybody else getting sick of the vatican boycotting movies?

I think what mostly irritates them is that they've lifted alot of their stuff (storyline, themes etc) from the bible (Book of Revelations..i think) which seems to add weight to the storyline

exactly. ppl are reading too much into it. it's all part of the media hype anyway. and the number 666 bears no significance to Muslims.

I understood the upset about the Da Vinci Code because it villified in fiction organisations that do exist referencing theories many believe in. I was not especially happy about The Passion because the play has historically inspired attacks on Jews and because Gibson was anything but sensitive when explaining his eagerness to make it. In this case it seems like just another horror flick and unless there's something I'm missing, it can't be taken seriously, so just don't be superstitious. I do understand the church's issue and I think film-makers should take on board that the church is concerned at being portrayed as all dark and shady when no doubt most of the church consists of well-meaning pious types.

Four actually because I missed out a dot in my e-mail address when setting this one up and had to start again. I happened to notice when 100 got to [url= posts, and set up 100man and now 100man has 613 posts, so I set up this one. Hopefully this will be enough to get me into heaven. Anyway I was saying, by all means watch the movie but don't be superstitious. Wink

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

Click on the blue highlited 613... brief version:

"Wikipedia" wrote:
In Judaism there is a tradition that the Torahcontains 613 commandments. According to the main source, of these 613 commandments, 248 are mitzvot aseh ("positive commandments") and 365 are mitzvot lo taaseh ("negative commandments"). 365 corresponded to the number of days in a solar year and 248 was at that time believed to be the number of bones or significant organs in the human body.
