I let someone else use my PC today. for ten minutes or so.
and now I am stuck on a virus infested computer where firefox is refusing to start!
All my bookmarks/saved passwords have been corrupted.
I will need to run a virusscan/antispywarescan and god know what else.
and Internet explorer is a rather tacky browser. I almost hate it now.

I have atleast got around the internet explorer problem. Opera browser.
I've got a younger brother just as annoying. He's always doing something to muck up my computer.
If you have the cd for internet security it shouldn't be a problem to get rid of the virus....should take you about a few weeks to fix it
By the way I've spent more than a grand on upgrading and fixing my computer in the past two years. Would anyone like to mention how much they have spent fixing or upgrading pc's?
My PC is too ancient to actually spend any money to upgrade it.
I am starting to use linux a bit now aswell... and it does not suffer frm the same problems as wndows.
Mind you it has a few of its own though.
thing is I normally let others use my pc, but I have it under lockdown. I cannot remember the last time it got infected.

Isn’t it weird how dependent we’ve become of the internet?
I have to register to take couple of exams for my PGCE and registration for these exams can only take place online, I have to book the test online, I can only access past papers online…and in the test centre the exam will take place online.
Many bank transactions take place online…this year my University scrapped the paper registration system and stated that enrolment/registering for modules can only take place online…..the only way to pay our fees is online.
Lecturer’s don’t even give out lecture notes anymore…they say that we need to print them off ourselves from the internet which they put up every week.
If it wasn’t for the internet I couldn’t even contribute to the Revival…
If I didn’t love going out shopping, I’d even shop online too.
Society has become very dependent on the internet...which isnt good when it messes up.

For me thouhg, everything is working apartf from Firefox.
I have uninstalled deleted every instance of the thing, deleted all associated files, removed any registry keys and it still will not work after reinstalling.
It just says its already running. Very annoying.
This may the motivation for me to dump windows. (I have a very good fedora core 5 install on my PC, but I have had no motivation until now to use it for anything apart from just messing about with the PC...)
Opera browser is almost good enough, but it has a couple of shortcomings from how I like to browse.
And then there is the inherent feeling that there is some malicious software on my PC that the antispy/antivirus is not detecting. Not a safe feeling at all.

lol, i used to have a similar problem, my older brother used to much up the family computer all the time with viruses and all sorts. Anti-Virus scans were the first thing you'd do, followed by anti-spyware scans, followed by registry clean up, re-boot the computer. And if that didnt solve the problem i would salvage as much as i could then format the hard drive with a clean installation of XP.
Fortunately when i went to uni i decided i couldnt hack sharing a computer with anyone else so i invested in a shuttle system (cost around £500.00 including flat screen monitor and other stuff) to which im still using today, never had a virus infection, or a spyware problem or ever had to reformat the hard drive. So i let the family run riot on the other computer, not my problem anymore. Till they killed it.
So now ive upgraded the family computer again... cost an extra £200.00. And since im spendng that amount of money, i'm the one who has to look after it as i have to let my brother and sister on it too.

Well I have just given up with the repair job. Too much hassle.
I have managed to get everything that I can think of fully working on fedora. Over here there will be zero security issues. There are a couple of things that it cannot do, but I njever did those things anyway.
The only problem atm is changing my mindset. Before whenever I booted Fedora it was just to mess about with the innards. Windows was for work. Now Upon Booting Fedora I have to give up the urge to just break things to see if I can fix them... (I did a clean install of fedora, so previous brokenness will not affect anything. I must say Fedora Installation is so much better than windows...)
Ofcourse there is wine if I need to use any windows programs. If have a legal version of Dreamweaver which I may use. But Fedora comes with bluefish editor in extra's, which seems more powerful for how I use dreamweaver. (I rarely use the gui interface, mostly coding by hand.)
But this transition has cost me alot of time. I was planning to actuall do some work on a few websites this weekend. (I am starting a separate hopefully for-profit project when I get the time...)

Oh, and I somehow managed to fix the firefox error. Not sure exactly which step did it, as I did quite a few things, but atleast its now working.
Its made me waste an entire weekend though.

You know theres something wrong when it suddenly decides to 'fix itself'
and if you're not sure what caused it and how you resolved it... chances are it will happen again. I take it un-installing it and then doing a fresh installation didnt help? Isnt there a repair function when asked to uninstall???

Nope... I uninstalled, cleaned up about ten to 15 diferent thing, removed all folders etc... deleted registry keys... and it started working again.
It may have been from a program lock somewhere... supposedly there is a program lock which would result in what happened to me... but when I was about to fix that, it started working already... I think. Unless I did remove the program lock first.
