Free Mixing in Islam

Salaam Alykum,
i understand that free mixing is haraam in islam and women and men are not allowed to be in the same company of each other unless there is a good reason behind it, however are we allowed to email, text or talk to non-mehram like on msn? because that won't be free mixing as where not in the company of males.

jzkallah
salaam alykum

i do not really know the answer to this as well, so could someone please answer :?

However i dont think there is much diffrence between interacting with the opposite sex on here or interacting with the opposite sex on msn

not informally, no - just if its important/necessary.

i think there is a difference because forums are public, whereas MSN convos are private, so the scholarly ruling must differ.

forums open up personalities and that can get attention

weve seen it happen as well

and havnt been on any other forum, but here we dont stick to topic and talk alot about out personal or daily lives

so i cant see how forums are diff unless the person is very stringent

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

the hadith about shaitaan being the third applies to a guy and girl who are unnecessarily chatting alone on MSN or whatever, but not here (unles its a PM). ofcourse the same rules of interaction must apply either way i.e. we should keep to the important stuff as much as possible and be reserved. still, lets hope shaikh salim gets back to us on this one!

many times on here there may be only two people online and they may be opposite sexs and interacting with each others comments through posts, therefore they are chatting alone and that same hadith should apply

also on msn you do not have to talk privately as you can have group discussions

how many of the interaction in this forum important and necessary - not much at all

but they are still in the public domain because those posts are there for everyone to see.

i know but i was referring to the usual private convos.

only if you're looking at the 'no topic' thread. Wink i'd like to think majority of members' posts are addressing the topic at hand.
at the end of the day though, as Fresh Prince pointed out, it depends on the individual member being stringent about such things.
