Muslim activists burn Valentine's Day cards

Nearly two dozen black-veiled Muslim women stormed gift and stationery shops Friday in Indian Kashmir, burning Valentine's Day cards and posters to protest a holiday they say imposes Western values on Muslim youth. No one was hurt in the half-dozen or so incidents, and police cordoned off the area to prevent the women from marching through Srinagar 's main shopping district to continue their ransacking.

The women were from the Kashmiri Islamic group Dukhtaran-e-Millat, or Daughters of the Community, Kashmir 's only women's separatist group, whose members are also known for their fiercely conservative social views. "We will not let anyone sell these cards or celebrate Valentine's Day," said Asiya Andrabi, the group's leader, as she held a burning poster in her hand. "These Western gimmicks are corrupting our kids and taking them away from their roots."

She said that the raids were carried out "not to harm anyone but to make them realize that this is against Islam's teachings." The protesters dispersed after chanting religious slogans. Mohammad Sarwar, though, was furious as he looked over the goods tossed around his small stationery store.

They barged in, grabbed cards and posters and burnt them outside. Most of the cards were not even Valentine cards. It is difficult to do business with such threats looming overhead," he said.

Valentine's Day has become increasingly popular in India over the past decade. But it has also become a cultural flash point, opposed each year in India by conservative Hindu and Muslim groups who see it as a reflection of growing permissiveness among young people in this tradition-bound nation.

Jammu-Kashmir is the only Muslim-majority state in Hindu-majority India , but fundamentalist voices have not been heeded here in the past. Past efforts by hard-line groups to enforce Taliban-style moral codes have been largely ignored by Kashmiris, reports the AP

Those who burnt Valentine cards were complete asses.

Only Wahhabi morons would do such a stupid thing.

Why on Earth would anyone would want to burn a symbol of expression of love.

It boggles the mind.

Omrow

[edit by admin]

I deleted a word. you may not like it, but I saw it as the best course of action.

what is wrong with valentines?

apart from its a ceremony celebrating the death of an individual, who was also christian?

Its only wrong if its used between non-married people.

I am sure a husband/wife will lile the gesture...

But its a no-no for romeo's and julliet's.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

naj,

It is pretty obscene and ridiculous that you only judged it 'wrong' when you were told some of the cards were Happy Birthday cards. Should British non-Muslims be burning Eid cards? Arson, charming.

Whatever you do, know that I will always love you. Or else.

the burning, as the case with almost all burnings, is stupid

but on the not of valentines, a load of rubbish

another commercial scam, and also has its pagan history

and love is for everyday, everymoment

not one day of the year for the companies to capitalize from

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

Well, it is a day that love is commonly valued, and an opportunity to show your partner what you're made of. Not a day for a wise guy to ignore. It is also a day for blurting it out to the guy/girl of your dreams. On this day it is a most welcome risk.

Salaam

There’s nothing wrong with a husband and wife expressing their love to one another on Valentine….yes, they can also do that all year round but so what if they choose to do that on that day when there is an increase in cards/gifts etc etc in the shops?

Of course, unmarried people should totally keep away from this. However, unfortunately this day is more geared towards them…I feel for the youth here, as they’re bombarded with so many mixed messages.

In high school we had this secret valentine day rose service…as a 15 year old I remember feeling so bummed because I didn’t receive a rose and all my mates did. :?

And regarding burning cards…100man made a very valid point, imagine if non Muslims burnt our Eid cards, how would we feel? And as it has already been pointed out, burning cards will not make people stop celebrating valentine Day.

Wasalaam

100 man;

By the way no-one mentioned happy B'day cards, im not for B'day cards an al. Even though i wouldnt personally have the nerve to do such act....i totally understand why the ladies who bombarded the shop did it, i can imagine the frustration and anger they came across.

As the shop keeper was also muslim, it was haraam for him to sell these cards as its helping others to sin..

Yes i know ruining other peoples business is wrong, and the way they did it was wrong, but they prob got the message across anyway...Yes there are peaceful ways of doing it.

Its an imitation of the kufaar, 'whoever imitates is one of them' .

By me even husband and wife should refrain from expressing their love on this pagan day as it is still a means of resembling the kufaar and associates with their holiday there of

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is not permissible for the Muslims to imitate them in anything that is specifically part of their festivals, whether it is food, clothing, bathing, lighting fires, or changing a custom of daily life or worship… To sum up, they should not do any of the specific rituals of their (the kuffaar’s) festival on that day; rather the day of their festival should be just another ordinary day for the Muslim.” (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 25/329)

i dont think if a husband and wife choose to express their love on 14th feb then they copying the kufaar

if anything-why set a day aside to NOT express ur love

Yep you express your love just like you would any other day.....you dont go showing extra on valentines coz thats just rather un-islamic.

how is it not 'copying the kuffar'? who sed the couple are not going to express their love on that day - it just goes by like any other day, now unless the couple have a totally loveless relationship, 'any other day' doesnt mean they're being horrible to eachother... :?
there's nothing wrong with setting aside a day to be especially romantic or whatever, but y does this HAVE to be the 14th of Feb? cant it be their anniversary? in fact that makes more sense wudn u say??

the same argument is for mother's day and father's day

all the relationships above are halaal relationships-so is valentine day (if between husband and wife)

expressing love is encouraged

big deal if they happen to do it on certain dates-so what if they do it on the 14th AND on their anniversay AND on their B'day?

the only reason why I always buy mum sumin on mothers day is cos there's more choice avalibale in shops

"MuslimSisLilSis" wrote:

Why would a muslim husband and wife want to specifiy this day 14th Feb to express their love ?

If the jews and christians have that view then i DO think it is imitating them otherwise it could be any other day. It is imitating their customs and behaviour. The husband and wife can express their love via gifts etc..thru-out they year not 1 day only.

Well thats the view i hold...U obviously dont.

"naj" wrote:

as far as i'm aware mothers/fathers day did not originate from some religious custom, ppl just made it a day in the year and shops took advantage of it to make money, as always.

whereas 'Saint Valentine's Day' clearly has some religious significance to christians...

i dont know the history behind most festival

however I'm sure that most ppl who DO celebrate V day dont do it for religious reasons

just like when I ate turkey and recieved xmas cards las year-I didnt do it for religious reasons

surely in a marriage unexpected displays of affection are much more appreciated than the 'i'm doing this coz its expected of me' type things... :?

it depends on the couple

of course there shud be no expectation or demands

I'm just speaking generally-I doubt any person wud have an issue with their other half expressing their love

whatever day they choose to do it

be it 14th Feb or any other day in the year
