Gay Muslims
This Channel 4 documentary shows how the experiences of five lesbian and gay Muslims in Britain challenge the heterosexual bias in Muslim communities and illustrate the diversity within Islam. Tamsila Tauqir reports
Over the sinister introductory music to the programme, presenter Sonia Deol says: ‘Islam is fierce in its condemnation of homosexuality.’ Let’s be fair, antagonism towards homosexuality is no more exclusive to any one community than favouring men, the able-bodied and those with wealth and power.
The activist
Some 200 lesbian and gay Muslims were contacted by the programme makers but only a handful were willing to be interviewed, and most of those insisted on keeping their identities hidden. Only one was prepared to show his face and give his true name. He was Adnan Ali, an activist on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) Muslims.
Adnan described how, when he first came out about his sexuality in Pakistan, he was physically and verbally abused. He then came to the UK, where he chatted online with members of the Al-fatiha Foundation in the States. Al-fatiha is an international organisation dedicated to questioning Muslims who are LGBT and their friends. Adnan then set-up a sister group called Al-fatiha UK, now called Imaan.
The voices
The interviewees speak of their commitment to and belief in Islam, though instead of having their beliefs supported by their community and family, they face being ostracised. ‘Razeem’ speaks of his pain at being denied access to the children of his previous marriage, despite having a legal right to access and the fact that his wife ran away with another man. He also wishes there were more role models, like Adnan Ali, for gay Muslims.
‘Shakir’ and his parents find it easier to accept lesbianism than gay men’s homosexuality. ‘Farah’ contemplates going back into the closet, to lie about her sexuality to ease the tension in her relationship with her parents. Presenter Sonia Deol says that the gay Muslim group, Imaan, supports the idea of ‘keeping sexuality a private matter’.

I dont know whether to laugh or cry.
Lets start off nice. In the beginning of the programme the voiceover chatting about one sodomite says that he got married . . . . to a woman. Sounds like a big shock!
And then towards end dum.b she does same thing to "Razeem" when he says he is gonna get married; and she goes summat like "to a woman?"
SPAS! Men get married to women.
And then the angry bit. That Adnan Devil's spawn says he want a nikaah with that sodomite and he wants to have Quran read at his "ceremony".
And worse, worst of ALL was that woman who wore a niqab at the london thing and said how Islam aint against sodomites. The woman said all that wearing a niqab, I hope her face burns. How dare she bad-naam the noble pure and holy veil by donning it and proclaiming her disciplship to lucifer the accursed?
I pray to ALLAH that those who have defamed and abused Islam die the death of dogs. May their faces be blackened, and in particular those who wore niqab and then proclaimed their discipleship to Iblees, may her face be filled with blisters, thenn may it be deformed and disgrace colour her in this world and in the eternity.
The issue aint with homos, I am incensed at their disrespect and mockery of religion. If she went with hair flowing and said rubbish it would have been bad; but wearing a Holy Veil and saying that. She has made people think that perhaps some women who wear veil are like her; ALLAH forgive us for the whisperings the devil and his cohorts put in our minds.

What was more shocking was the fact that most of them didn’t even consider their homosexuality as a sin…
Being “gay and proud” is a whole different (worse) issue altogether….
But I don't agree with being ostracized from the community…cos this just makes them more well “gay”….If the community is cutting them off etc...then of course they're going to be running more so into the arms of those people they shouldnt be with...
I don’t agree with banning access to kids etc
But that was a really bad programme….

Wasn't able to watch the programme, but that stuff about homosexuality being OK in Islam was to be expected.
Just look at Irshad Manji. She sees herself as an Islamic reformer but doesn't let the fact that she's lesbian get in the way. In fact she doesn't tire of telling people about it.
Even then, Muslim gays in the US have their own mosque(s) and imams.

I totally disagree about the kids. It is imperative upon the mother and other relatives to keep the kids away from the devil and his followers. The “lurgies” bit in the programme made me laugh….the the mum served her son in separate plates and cups.
I didn’t know that being homosexual is contagious.
It was bad that the entire programme just focused on being “gay and proud”. No emphasis was placed on seeking a cure for their perversion.

Mufti Barkatullah disappointed me AGAIN unfortunately.
He should have condemned the homosexuality rather than trying to help him make contact with the kids. Im sorry but I dont need an alim to tell me that a sodomite should NOT be allowed near children; my imaan demands it.

he didnt do a great job, he was bieng more of the social counseller rather than an Imaam (altho u can be both)
BUT THEN AGAIN, he may have said more, not neccesarily got onto the show - they can cut things to suit thier needs

1. is homosexuality genetic or not- no proof what so ever it is genetic
2. its a sickness just like incest, having sex with an animal, peodophillia etc... AS ALL OF THESE ACTS ARE ONES WHICH ONE CANNOT CONTROL THEIR DESIRES, WHERE OUR DESIRES BECOME FILTHY.
3. what islam says... emphasise on the fact that it is not normal, not natural, not purpose of sex, its harmful, damaging....an dtotally contradicts teachings of islam...
4. Homosexuality was illegal 40 years ago....now its ok...we dont change our morals and values...we get our morals from the Creator.
5. Gay Muslims need to speak to Islamic people, to have their questions answered, to get help, to get tarbiyyah, .... we need to face reality and help them ....

The punishment is death indeed.
The adultery punishment is clear; the Sahabah Karaam were baffled in how to deal with the sodomites and how their mode of death was to be. Infact I can sympathise with the thief, the adulterer, the shaver, even the murderer. But the sodomite he has perverted his very essence. He is no longer a human.

Gayness and whatever term they like to use, is a disease created by society......we should hate that, and try to combact it in an Islamic manner
condemning these people achieves nothing
