lol well we are doing some preliminary stuff now, and i've been talking to a Cardinal about converting.

She loves NYC and wants to have the wedding up there with Cardinal Egan, however Bishop Baker is the bishop in our diocese and I wouldn't want to insult him by circumventing his authority.

I think her grandparents are close to the cardinal.

So this is a MESS.

But once that prelim stuff gets worked out we are hiring a couple wedding planners and i'm just going to turn into the human checkbook/yes man.

So far this looks like it's going to be a gigantic affair - both our mothers are highly involved and it looks like they will be using the opportunity to invite all their political and financial friends. On top of that she's got a huge family, and lots of friends, and I have a decent sized family and lots of friends. We estimated the other day at somewhere in the vicinity of 3-400 at the wedding alone, and about 5 or 6 for the reception.

lol which is precisely why i'm just handing it off to her.

I think she is shooting for as traditional (and extravagent) as it gets.

I am going to have a very simply wedding day.

I have no intention of wasting a lot of cash for just one day.

Why?

Because it would give me far more pleasure when that money is
spent in such a way that goes to make the queen of the home a lot more comfortable.

I totally can not handle long hair, so I get it trimmed!

Does anyone here get their hair trimmed from the hairdressers? 😃

er. . . shoulder length hair is too short for women.

There IS a difference on whether she can cut the hair. But even those who permit its cutting would not permit shoulderlength hair, must be to the mid-back atleast.

And this is not the view that I hold. Our view is she must not cut the hair at all.

Lil Sis, no lecture, but shoulder length hair is as unnatural for women as shaving is for men.

we have bare women only salons in East London

I'm doing my sisters head in to take me-but she wants to get hers down closer to Eid and I want to avoid the Eid rush :roll:

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. Is it permissible for a woman to have her hair shortened? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Dear questioner, we are very pleased for the great confidence you repose in us and we really commend your apparent interest in having a better understanding of the teachings of Islam and the rulings of this great religion in all matters. In fact, Islam is a religion that encompasses all aspects of life and secures guidance and light for all mankind.

Women often opt for short hair because of the way it frames the face. Short hairstyles are sometimes a form of beautification for most women.

Given this, according to Islam, there is nothing wrong in women having their hair shortened as long as it is done for the sake of beautifying themselves and nothing more. This is quite different from shaving head, which is completely forbidden for women. If a woman has her hair cropped with the intention of looking masculine, then it is forbidden because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "May Allah's Curse be inflicted upon women who imitate men and vice versa." (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

In this regard, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

A woman can shorten her hair provided she avoids a hairstyle peculiar to men. The Prophet (peace and blessings be on him) has cursed men who copy women and women who copy men. This applies to hairstyle and appearance. So long as she avoids this, she is permitted to cut her hair. There is no prohibition in the sources. We should remember that originally the rule is permission; prohibition is only an exception.

However, we must add a word of caution. A Muslim woman is required to cover her head and not expose it except to her husband or her mahram (non-marriageable relative).

Shedding more light on this issue, we'd cite the following Fatwa:

Islamic Law differentiates between 'shaving' and 'shortening' one's hair. Shaving hair (i.e., cutting it by a sharp object such as a razor blade or skin-close clippers, etc.) is forbidden for women unless there is a justifiable reason such as when the woman needs an operation on her head or has to undergo special treatment on her scalp. But shortening her hair is allowed if she desires to do so. The only thing is that when women shorten their hair, they should not be doing this to imitate men. Therefore, the intention is important behind the act.
