Totall agree wiv u salma saw 1 was gruesome but rubbish (not much of a storyline). However sayin that you cant watch the first and then not watch the second, so i'l probs go 2 see it and hopefully it'l be better than the first.

Eid mubarak all? sorry, but been busy, and its pushed it past modnight... so eid Mubarak to those who did it yesterday aswell.

Around here some mosques have apparently had 31 fasts, coz they say they started it wrong...

I gotta big them up.

I would never expect the muslims of today (well ,the committees) to admit such a mistake.

It has restored some of my confidence for the muslim community.

When I wished some Hindus a Shubha Dipavali, turned out it was yesterday but the celebrations last three days. In a shop they shared some of those delicious Indian sweets with me, that they were keeping under the counter for Hindus and friendly folk. Yum.

Hayder, thanks for your interest. It is hard for me to give an exact picture but I will try to cover the main things.

Sukkot is also called Z'man Simchateinu, Our Time of Joy. It is one of the five major festivals - the Yamim Nora'im (Days of Awe) are Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, and the Shalosh Regalim (three pilgrimage (foot) festivals) are Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. These five festivals are commanded in the Torah. Sukkot is a harvest festival on which we commemorate the B'nei Yisrael's time in the wilderness by building temporary huts with ceilings of leaves or bamboo. We also decorate by hanging fruit from the ceiling and generally beautifying the walls. The very technically minded or those without resources sometimes follow the set regulations which permit alternatives for the walls so long as the ceiling is legit, ie basically a removable skylight with some bamboo on top, but I don't go in for that. In a warmer country we could safely sleep in them, and some communities chance that either way. Otherwise it is where we eat for the week. Grumpy neighbours have been known to complain to the council, which gives a week to take it down, which is funny. Anyway. There are certain plants which are held and blessed each day to commemorate the harvest, and each has symbolic significance - the lulav (palm branch), etrog (citron, a sweet smelling citrus fruit), hadassim (myrtle branches) and aravot (willow branches). As on all Jewish festivals we spend time with our families, host visitors, pray, eat and sing together. Not to mention kiddush (blessing over wine) at each meal, and a l'chaim with friends. There is a custom especially for children to visit sukkot around the neighbourhood for a snack and z'mirot (songs). The first two days are Yom Tov, which means we keep laws fairly similar to Shabbat and do not work. Four days later is Shemini Atzeret (Eighth Day Gathering), another day of Yom Tov that marks the end of Sukkot.

The following day is called Simchat Torah (Rejoicing of Torah). Each Shabbat we read a portion of Torah and on Simchat Torah the reading is completed and we go through from start to finish. This means a lot of honours are passed out for people to bless the Torah, to hold and wrap the Sifrei Torah (Torah Scrolls), and to open the Aron (ark in which the Sifrei Torah are stored). Also, we dance around the synagogue and sometimes in the street with the Sifrei Torah, and it is also an honour to hold the Torah and recite the verses preceeding each circuit of the bimah (central lectern from which the Torah is read). Essentially there is a lot of singing and dancing, sweets are thrown to the kids and there is a big kiddush with fruit, nibbles and cakes. The service can take up most of the day.

😂 I don't think there is a Jewish community in Oldham. There aren't that many of us in the UK so most communities are in big cities.

there is one in manchester... not too far away. (what? 5 miles? 10? not more than that...)

There are sukkot in gardens and balconies all over places like Salford, Bury, Prestwich and South Manchester. In London the kosher cafes build little sukkot on their pavement patches.

however i know the areas mentioned in manchester above do have a high presence, but still........i havnt seen these huts or heard of em!

I got the same kind of comments from those who did Eid on thursday..

They all said to me thats its a big sin to fast on Eid day and were telling me not to fast on thursday.

Hayder, I would love to show you pictures of our Sukkah in Manchester, which is a beautiful Sukkah my Dad and brothers build from scratch each year, lined with leaves and flowers (a lot of people have it down to a mini-marquee or hut with a bamboo roof), but I don't have pictures.
