JUST ENOUGH RELIGION TO HATE
with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf* and Br Abu Muntasir**
Date: Thursday 15th September 2005
Time: 6.30 pm - 10.15 pm
Venue: Friends House, 173-177 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BJ
"We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make
us love one another." - Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels (1667-1745)
A special evening with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Brother Abu Muntasir
reflecting on recent events and examining ways forward for Muslims
in the UK as we strive towards uniting as a community. The event will
be chaired by Dr Usama Hasan. Tickets are £10 per head and can only be
purchased at the door. Spaces are limited so do make sure you arrive
early. Credit cards and cheques will not be accepted.
* Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson was born in Washington State and raised
in Northern California. He accepted Islam in 1977 and subsequently
travelled to the Muslim world, studying for ten years in the UAE,
Saudi Arabia, as well as North and West Africa. He received teaching
licenses in various Islamic subjects from well-known scholars. After
ten years of studies abroad, he returned to the USA and took degrees
in Religious Studies and Health Care. He later founded the Zaytuna
Institute. He was the first American lecturer to teach in Morocco's
oldest University, the Kairoiuin in Fez. He has also translated a
number of classical Arabic texts and poems into English. He currently
resides in Northern California with his wife and four children.
** Abu Muntasir Ali is perhaps one of the most competent all round
speakers in the UK. He is currently the president of Jam'iat Ihyaa
Minhaaj As-Sunnah, a charity based in Ipswich, and is a Software
Engineer by profession. Br Abu Muntasir has been involved in da'wah
initiatives across the UK for over 20 years and has extensive
experience in both teaching and Muslim social affairs. As a pioneer
in the field of grassroots Islamic development, who is also well
travelled abroad, he has introduced a number of speakers who are
now well known in the UK. When many of today's vocal 'activists'
were crawling in their nappies, Abu Muntasir strived to raise the
word of Allah high. As a dedicated father of several children, he
makes time to organise the annual JIMAS conference in Leicester,
delivers lectures on a variety of relevant topics, and offers
sensible and practical advice to those who seek it.

JUST ENOUGH RELIGION TO HATE with with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf*
Small Heath Station. But I'm not sure if it gets direct trains from Manchester. :?
Otherwise New Street is your best bet. You can either catcha connecting train at New Street or bus it from the town centre (no. 60, no. 8 ).

JUST ENOUGH RELIGION TO HATE with with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf*
It's a mosque. Most likely to be main prayer hall. No seats. This is what it looks like,

The London event was like about 4 hours. This will most likely go from Zuhr to Asr.

So who finally went. I went and I have to say that I thought it was a really good event and how events should be done. I don't really like conference and talks in the mosques are generally much better.
Got to say as well that Hamza hit the button again. That was one of his best speeches IMO. It certainly made me think and take a good hard look at some aspect of my life, especially treatment of others. Didn't realise Aftab Malik was doing the introductions, he seem a pretty cool character.
JUST ENOUGH RELIGION TO HATE with with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf*
I didn't realise it was Aftab Malik. He never mentioned his own name. I just realised now, I came across his pic on the net and thought 'that guy was hosting the talk today'.
The Quranic recitation at the start was very good.
Sheikh Al-Sudani's zikr went on for a bit. Takes getting used to.
Sheikh Hamza was great. Clear message as always.
Hayder might have been there too. :?

Yeah the Quran reciation was beautiful. Got to agree with the Zikr bit, but alhamduillah it was still beautiful. Hamza was brillant, he cover all subject really well and explain himself really well. He made me realise that some change have to be made an inshallah my approach will change abit now, and I know what direction I have to go. Yeah I didn't realise it was that Aftab bloke and was wondering who he was, but my cuz told me in the end, he look different from that debate he was on. I was looking out for a really tall person too see if I could some how recognise you, I know it was a long shot, but there was too many. Only decided to go at the last minute.
