I think someone sitting behind me was smoking on the bus, I didn't turn around to look, but the smell was strong enough to suggest that, that made me be thankful of the public smoking ban. I hate being around people smoking.

Drivers who smoke at the wheel usually get a £60 fine and three points on their license and that clearly should be a deterrant! Just thought i should let you guys know that peice of information.
But say for example, there's a friend/partner in the passenger seat whose smoking, while you have kids/siblings behind you - should smoking be banned for them too? Do you think your car should have the same laws that are imposed in public spaces and buildings?
@TPOS: 'Containing children' sounds a little strange. I'd only realised once it'd been posted and i think it should've been 'carrying children', perhaps?
If that's true that you can get fined and 'punished' for driving in your car, then i think that's stupid and controlling. it's your car, and you're not disrupting anyone else. that's a stupid rule

I would'e thought they're banning it for the child's sake rather than it being a distraction. There's all those respiratory problems assosicated with second hand smoking.
Lol yeah, because smoking requires as much concentration as using your phone does. Does that mean having a drink of water should be banned while driving

Technically its not a criminal offence to drink, smoke, eat whilst driving. BUT you could potentially be done for careless driving. It will in most cases be down to the PO-PO discretion as to whether to charge you with careless driving.

My thought was similar to this when I asked how stopping people smoking in cars carrying children would work. It seems controlling, a bit like stopping people smoking in their homes. It would be kinda hard to monitor as well wouldn't it?

If passenger then I open window and smoke, otherwise on long journey some bad trouble might happen and a few drags on a cancer stick are harmless compared to what might happen.
How would that work?
In theory, yes.

Smoking should be banned altogether, and smoking near children is just inhumane, stupid and crazy.
... Aaaand the Health Minister agrees with the majority vote too.
