Superstitions
I hate it when people are superstitious.
Like when i had my umbrella open inside:
Its bad luck.
Yes obviously it is. I might poke you in the eye with your annoying comments.
Re: Supersitions
Re: Supersitions
Tell them there is no such thing as luck- to believe in it, is to commit shirk. 😉 :p (if they're Muslim)
Re: Supersitions
to most people "luck" is just a word.
and some superstitions are sensible:
Don't walk under ladders as something might fall on you.

thats not the correct superstition, that is called being sensible. the superstition is walking under a ladder will bring bad luck
superstition, believe that something other than Allah affects your Destiny. the black cat, the broken mirror. goes to show a little bit though... people who supposedly dont need God and stuff..they still need some kind of reassurance( even if negative reassurance (if that exists)) that something is in control. but they came up with sad stuff though.. i broke my mirror i get 7 years bad luck? ehh waaat?

bad luck in the form of a brick falling on you.
yes, superstition is bad, but often I find them amusing and like "old wisdom" like you would tell kids to scare them to be good.
Re: Supersitions
most superstitions exhibited by muslims are there for a reason,as all are based on the unseen jinn perhaps, as they are unseen it would be unwise to totally disregard them.

IMO, Superstitions are just a set of beliefs without any real evidence behind it..

well that particular one would come under the heading of nazar which is real of course

that might be considered safety from jinn perhaps
you see i've been watching the programme 'playing the devils advocate' on ummah channel and the imaam on that is very informative. i too was an unbeliever but he seems very plausible in his explanations since he is hanafi sunni i find no reason to doubt him i would desparately like a reason to doubt him as i dont like the idea of jinn and nazar being so commonplace
Re: Supersitions
If a Friday falls on the 13th it's suppose to give you bad luck
If you cut your nails at night it's suppose to give you bad luck
If a cat crosses your path it's suppose to give you bad luck
If you go underneath a ladder it's suppose to give you bad luck
If you break a mirror you're suppose to get 7 years of bad luck
You're not allowed to visit non related women for the first 40 days if they've given birth
If you masturbate a lot you're suppose to go blind
A women is not allowed to cook rice if she's on her days it's conceded that the rice grains would not cook well
If you hurt or harm a mother cow it's suppose to give you bad luck
If you think that there is an evil spell on you you're suppose to burn red chillies and wave salt or alum around your head
Re: Supersitions
What you gotta do is separate the Muslim from the non Muslim according to the allam on ummah channel the Muslim superstition is based on fact and therefore is not mere superstition. Like everything else you must fully study and understand before you disregard. And sometimes common sense plays a part.

I'd disagree. Although apparently black magic is prevalent in Asian communities they're not worried about such stuff until they are shown 'signs' of it. (No, I don't believe it's as common as people say)
However they can have other stupid, irrational beliefs like if someone walks under your arm then that person won't grow??? (or something like that) there's something about not weddings and not doing something on a certain day (tuesday?) and probably loads of others but I have to say I'm not exposed to much of such stuff from my family 🙂

is it prevalent?
how come it is only the religious folk who get all obssessed with it?
Re: Supersitions
I don't think it's only religious people who are obsessed about it. First signs of unexplainable illness and most people jump to the conclusion that its jinn/black magic
Re: Supersitions
The man on ummah Channel says that if you have been to doctors etc and no one can explain illness it's probably black magic! And he says cancer is definitely work of jinn or black magic. Don't know what to believe now
Re: Supersitions
He's wrong.
People get ill.
A lot of these "religious" TV channels push superstition in the guise of religion.
There was a program on one on the weekend where they were looking at the "numerical value of names", asking people what years they were born in and then using superstitious mumbo jumbo to suggest or not if the name was good for them and what they should change it to.
"My daughter called X born in year Y doesnt agree to get married!"
"well, you see the numerical value of the name clashes with the year, so change her name to Z and she will be fine."

I choose to believe science in this case. I mean saying something like Schizophrenia is linked to jinn is more likely...
And, yes if the doctors can't explain it then it could be linked to black magic, but I mean people don't even give them a chance to work it out. Like someone close to me had joint pains but the doctors couldn't verify, at first, that it's arthritis and so everyone started saying it must be black magic and so and so must've done it but then a while later the doctors confirmed what it was.
And the doctors don't know everything, science can always be making new discoveries...
Re: Supersitions
I know I know but why is that man on there scared the sh1t out of everyone and he's a teacher of hadith or something else important and he's always quoting from the Quran and Hadith and Sunna and great ulema

thats what they do - they mix the stuff
...There was a program on one on the weekend where they were looking at the "numerical value of names", asking people what years they were born in and then using superstitious mumbo jumbo to suggest or not if the name was good for them and what they should change it to...
and they were quoting ahadith etc about having a good name, as if that suddenly made their jump into superstition on.
They mix the two and you forget or not see where one starts and the other ends.

irrational belief in the ominous significance of a particular thing, event, etc.
Believing in God is superstition too.
not superstition as it is the most rational thing to believe.
it is irrational on the other hand to NOT believe in God.

But it is a belief in the 'unseen' therefore classed as irrational/superstition...
Obviously we don't see it as irrational though 😃

many unseen things are rational ideas.
the whole science of the universe works on things that are unseen, and somethings even undetectable, but the logic and the maths say that they must exist. dark matter, dark energy, the higgs boson, quantum mechanics are all very rational ideas, but they are unproven and often undetected.

Re: Supersitions
lol I said it is classed as a superstition
Re: Supersitions
Would that class knowledge of my great great great great great grandparents as irrational/superstition? Knowbody can prove through SCIENCE that they exist. Though i am a SIGN that they did exist.

You got that off some story/talk didn't u? :p
Erm people who don't believe in God would just say it's down to the big bang or w/e...
Re: Supersitions
It's called rational thinking
Urrghh 'knowbody'??? Nobody***
Re: Supersitions
Why are you even continuing this conversation with me, as if I believe in it and you need to convince me otherwise? LOL
