For the first time in US history, at least 15 states have either approved or introduced bills banning sharia law.

These bills may make it a crime for Muslims to fast, pray, or even donate to charity. And on Thursday, in a move that many critics deem unconstitutional, congressional hearings chaired by Peter King, the Republican representative, will begin examining the so-called radicalisation within the American Muslim community.

On Wednesday's Riz Khan we discuss the rise of anti-Muslim rhetoric with Islamic scholar Sheikh Hamza Yusuf.

It depends on if they pass and in what form, but the repercussions can be quite extreme.

I doubt the end result will be though.

It won't apply to you, unless you live in the US and that particular state. But I serioulsy hope that even Republicans can realise the sheer daftness of this proposal.

This IS ridiculous! surely its against ur human rights??? the ones tht the US is always on about when it comes to other countries????? thts crazy though....and how would they implement it, get a policeman to guard every muslim household and stop people from praying?????? silly people...:/

the right wing - of any culture including muslims and ftm jews - takes a crass view of outsiders and when they think they are being defensive they invariably offend far more people than need be. however the usa and uk enshrine your rights in stone and claiming to expect that praying and fasting would be banned is absurd. the claim by youshutup that the gas chambers are practically imminent is also counterproductive bs. sure oppose the fundamentalist right but have some perspective for crying out loud.

I think what You Shutup (interesting name lol) was saying was that all that the right-wingers had left to argue for was the gas chambers. It's important to hope that most people/public figures will oppose these mad measures but we can't take that for granted anymore. If you'd told me that the Blair government would try to indefinately hold foreign nationals on mere suspicion of terrorism, then I would've probably laughed in your face. But it happened didn't it? Which is why we need to give a calm, calculated and constructive response to these things.

Hearing in the US congress to assess how much have Radical Muslims embedded themselve in the US and a proposed law in another state where it will state that Shariah law is now allowed.

The former could lead to problems - or not.

Clumsy wording of the latter could be a major issue there as doing anything permitted in Islam is shariah compliant and if they world it badly or let some ignorant people write it, it will change the idea of the law from "we dont want Islamic law to overtake the state" to "we have criminalised being Muslim".

All is yet to play for.

(in answer, it is just a different way of living, andwhen it comes to collective actions, people dont have one hive mind, so things can just happen without a collective decision enforcing it)
