Anyone's cajn recommend a good translation of the Quran?

I find it hard to study arabic by myself. i have had a few teachers and tried a few books. but i still cant understand a lot, let alone speak.

i think there is a different between understanding written arabic and understanding spoken arabic.

I think im going to start a new topic about learning arabic.

Anyone knows of a book where there is like a little summary of the lives of each sahabas?

Would it be better if you got yourself a tafsir? I say this because then you wont just be relying on the translation to understand it, the commentary will also give fiqh rulings which are derived from Quranic verses, or hadith which are related to the verses and as to why they were revealed.

There is no way you will learn Arabic to a high level by studying alone. Best to stick with a teacher. Which books you studying?

What's the difference?... I'm assuming you are talking about fusha.

Got just the book for you. Comes in 2 volumes and has 30 different companions so 60 altogether - some companions you will have never even heard of. Vol 1 & Vol 2

the tafsee is a good idea to read at home. but i was looking for just a little version that can be read on the bus.

I just finish this book about the 4 caliphs and it was great (sorry cant reference it here, as it was in french) and i was wondering, what happens after the 4 caliphs in terms of islamic History? i believe Mu'awiyyah Ibn Abi Sufyan became caliph?

any good books/internet links about the History of the islamic empire after the 4 caliphs?

Imam Hassan (ra) was the 5th caliph, for a period of 6 months or so (and AFAIK this period is also considered a part of the rashidah caliphate).

Then the two muslim camps united and Hadhrat Amir Mu'awiyah (ra) became the caliph.

Im learning to speak and read arabic

im not finding it that difficult to be honest
but I guess I have an advantage knowing urdu and some arabic previously

i recently bought this book and started reading it. i love it. Full of hadiths on everyday living and categorised well in my opinion. i never had a hadith book and this is the first i bought, i love it. its good to read a few hadiths from it per day.

im learning too. and the thing is, this ramadan ive read A LOT of the Quran (nearly finsih YAY!) and ive got to admit, im understanding some of it. and if i work harder inshallah i'll be able to understand a lot more.
furthermore, i also read the translation and find it so tiring and annoying (not the translation, the reading and stopping arabic) SO, i dont think im gona buy a translation (or i might, but not an expensive one, but they all seem expensive). 😃

i recommend these because there are a lof of things that are not being told to you about how disobedient companions like Umar were to the Prophet (pbuh).
they are praised only because they became rulers. as we know rulers re-write history to save their own skin. but Allah knows what they had done.

but then i ask myself. TO WHAT is it suppose to refer back to? I mean, how did Mubarakpuri write HIS book? and the people before him? Is it just account passed down from generations to generations? (a bit like ahadiths?)

Yes. Ilm ur Rijal - The science of the men/narrators. Bsaically part of the Islamic sciences is biographies of scholars, saints and the Companions. These would be passed down like ahadith except there is less rigour in the authentification of Seerah than in the authentification of Ahadith.

I've read the blue and red books by the way and they're good.

and yeah, Shaykh Mubarakpuri's book has loads of footnote throughout the book.

Now i need to go to ZamZam again...

ohh!! bought those cards! they're awesome, called "companions of the prophet" and there are 30 cards with a little summary of their life at the back. Most of them are companions i didnt know much about! its so fun to learn about them!
