tht would not increase the legibility of the text IMO (and the forums may be slightly decieving as there is the author content bar on the left of the posts that narrows the content area down... if that was on the right, it may become more claustraphobic).
The issue is of the font/fontzize/font colour on the yellow/peach background I think.
The forums/comments also have a light blue background which may be soothing and allow better concentration on the text.

i think its because its too skinny, unlike forum which is wider on the screen.
