Nominations for Muslim Personality of 2009

Time to nominate people who you think did something outstanding this year and should be recognised as a muslim personality for the whole of the year 2009.

Last year, I think no one won. Will this year be any different?

So, come on people, make your nominations and suggestions. and give a reason for your choice as that may give your candidate a fighting chance.

He is kind of discounted by the "of 2009" part of the title - so people who did something last year. He may be in it for inpiration throughout his life, but that is different from what he has achieved and inspired in the past year.

Sheikh Yusuf Estes (This wonderful man visited our school last year - and man he inspired me! I have to say he had quite an impact on me. I'd like to speak to him on a one-to-one basis someday though.)

Razwan Faraz ( a teacher at my school) - Just in the past year this man has made such a difference to my life, words can't express how greatful I am. He has helped me to believe in myself and he has helped me to change and to become a stronger and more confident person. He's helped me to dicover myself, to find out who I am, and to find out what i want from life; as well as helping me to deal with my past with great care and sesitivity. He is probably one of the first people i have trusted enough to talk to so openly. There is no doubt that he has certainly had a posotive influence on me and i shall remember him for that and someday i shall repay him - by making something out of my life and achieving my lifes dreams and ambitions. In the short time i have known him, he has made me feel so comfortable and confident in myself, that i can't thank him enough.
I hope this is enough to get him nominated because i really think he deserves it.

Muslim Professor Alimuddin Zumla of University College Hospital,London has been nominated for the British Medical Journal's 2010 Lifetiume Achievement award. Muslim leaders' response to Gaza suffering 'pitiful': Turkish PM

ISTANBUL — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday decried what he called Muslim leaders' inadequate response to Palestinian suffering in the Gaza Strip as "pitiful."

He made the remarks when asked to compare the attitude of other Muslim countries to Turkey's vehement outbursts against Israel over its devastating war on Gaza last year and its ongoing blockade of the impoverished enclave.

"The governments have failed to display the reactions that the world's Muslims expected from them. And this has been a pitiful aspect of the matter," Erdogan told reporters.

He spoke shortly before flying to the United Arab Emirates and then on to Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak met with Turkish officials in Ankara on Sunday, eager to defuse tensions between the two nations.

Once-flourishing Turkish-Israeli ties took a sharp downturn last year when Erdogan's Islamist-rooted government launched an unprecedented barrage of criticism of Israel's war on Gaza.

In a memorable outburst, Erdogan stormed out of a debate at the World Economic Forum, accusing the Jewish state of "barbarian" acts and telling its President Shimon Peres, sitting next to him, that "you know well how to kill people".

I think he is way more deserving than Freddie Kanoute - a Muslim leader that actually speaks for Muslims is a rare occurrence.

its not over 'til the fat lady sings. or someone actually writes something.

He stood up against the Gaza invasion in 2009, but that was not all - in 2008 he was almost barred from politics altogether for his stance that women should be allowed to wear the veil, in 2009, he made a start at peace with Armenia and the kurds, in 2008 he was trying to make peace between Syria and Israel - the Syria that a decade earlier btw Turkey was almost at war with.

So quite the few achievements that seems to spill out of the neat container that is 2009.

I think Yusuf Islam too.

I don't know what other notable stuff he's done over the year but i know he's still inspiring people and i think that's quite an achievement.

Also, everyone watches his docs in RS, and i think that's an achievement too, to incorporate yourself into an A-level syllabus, and also in such a way that retains the attention of a bunch of 17/18 year olds.
