If God wanted to give the Prophet ﷺ knowledge, there are more ways than physical to provide it.

There is a story/hadith about an assassin being hired to kill the prophet ﷺ in the Makkah days, while the Prophet ﷺ was doing the tawaf.

The assassin was ordered to not approach the Prophet ﷺ from the front, or make himself known, to not even look at the prophet (saw), or hear anything the prophet ﷺ said.

(the last two were orders given because the Prophet ﷺ was considered so obvious a sign of Allah (swt), that merely looking or seeing was often considered enough for a person to convert to Islam.)

The assassin approached from behind, I think he had something in his ears, and was looking down. when he got close, whatever was in his ear dislodged slightly, and the Prophet ﷺ addressed him by name (and yes, he dropped his knife and accepted islam).

Some could argue using this that "yes, the prophet saw saw someone behind him", but seeing someone does not give you their name or their biography etc., so I think it is best to say that God gave the Prophet ﷺ whatever knowledge which he saw fit to give and we cannot know how it all worked.

I was just reading about this the other day...

Allah (swt) did give the Prophet (pbuh) 'special' vision. He (pbuh) could see what others could not, as narrated in Tirmidhi, on the authority of Abu Dharr (ra), the Prophet (pbuh) said: 'I see what you all see not, and I hear what you hear not...'

The Prophet (pbuh) was able to see Jibril, and the other angels, in their true form. There is a hadith about how the Prophet (pbuh) could see each of the 600 hundred wings Jibril (as) had, and the gems and pearls that fell from each wing.
Other examples of this are the Prophet (pbuh) witnessing the angels washing the martyr Hanzala (ra), and also witnessing Ja'far bin Abi Talib (ra) in Paradise flying with angels, endowed with two wings.

The Prophet (pbuh) was also able to, by Divine aid, see over great distances. One of the miracles of the Prophet (pbuh) was when he was in Mecca and the Quraysh didn't believe him and so Allah (swt) showed him the Hallowed House in Jerusalem clearly before him: 'When Quraysh did not believe me, I stood in the sanctuary, and Allah (swt) showed me the Hallowed House, and so I began to tell them of its wonders, all the while looking at it.' [Bukhari and Muslim]

I have also heard before how the Prophet (pbuh) whilst leading prayer, ie in front, used to correct the sahaba's mistakes, or instruct them to close any gaps etc, without turning around, so he (pbuh) was able to see what was behind him as clearly as what was in front of him. I've found a few hadith on this:
On the authority of Abu Hurayra (ra) the messenger of Allah (swt) said: 'Do you see my qibla here? By Allah, your bows and prostrations are not hidden from me; I see you from behind my back.' [Bukhari and Muslim]
Abu Hurayra said the Prophet (pbuh) led us in prayer one day and then left saying: 'O so-and-so, do you not pray properly? Should the one who prays not be mindful of how to pray? For he is only praying for his own sake! By Allah, I see what is behind my back just as I see what is in front of me.' [Sahih Muslim]
Anas (ra) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) prayed with us one day. When the prayer was over he turned his face to us and said: "O people! I am your Imam, so do not get ahead of me when bowing and prostrating, nor in standing and exiting, for I see you before me and behind me." [Muslim]

I can't remember properly, but I think it is this book, that after reading it over seven days that you are apparently more likely to see the Prophet (pbuh) in a dream.

There is also an intriguing story that fits here about "live news" when there was a war between Muslims and some other group (Byzantine empire?) The Companions were getting updates and news of what was happening in the battle in Madinah from the Prophet (saw).

a scholar has said that about shamaa-il tirmidhi.

if the prophet ﷺ wants to reveal himself to you, he ﷺ will do so regardless of anything.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet delivered a sermon and said, "Zaid took the flag and was martyred, and then Ja'far took the flag and was martyred, and then 'Abdullah bin Rawaha took the flag and was martyred too, and then Khalid bin Al-Walid took the flag though he was not appointed as a commander and Allah made him victorious." The Prophet further added, "It would not please us to have them with us." Aiyub, a sub-narrator, added, "Or the Prophet, shedding tears, said, 'It would not p ease them to be with us."

Absolutely. And yes it was the shamaa'il that it was said about.
