Time to nominate people who you think did something outstanding this year and should be recognised as a muslim personality for the whole of the year 2009.
Last year, I think no one won. Will this year be any different?
So, come on people, make your nominations and suggestions. and give a reason for your choice as that may give your candidate a fighting chance.
Salaam
Theres bound to be many personalities out there who have made some contribution in 2009:
Amir Khan- became world champ!
Sayeeda Warsi- described on Question Time as the Most Powerful British Female Muslim
Yusuf Islam alongside Sami Yusuf have come out with new singles which always touch Muslims
Then you have the Muslim MP's....
Muslim scholars who always contribute but has anyone stood out this year?
Muslim writers.....
Activists and spokesmen/women like Yvonne Ridley, Asghar Bukhari from MPAC etc
theres loads more if you put your mind to it.....
we shouldn't have to, they should stand out.
There is only one that stands out for me: Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
Just because they exist and are muslim does not make them great Muslim personalities.
Where's the spectacle, the greatness? MPAC is beyond a joke. Yvonne Ridley needs to see a psychiatrist, Sayeeda Warsi is the token muslim in the Conservatives that allows them to say "we're not anti muslim, we have a muslim member - see!" and is not representative of many Muslim opinions.
If you want a controversial choice - Majid Nawaz from Quilliam.
More importantly, who is the one person who you think should get it this year, and why?
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
those nomination are you joking these are the real people who deserve it:
Zakir Naik
Anwar Awlaki
Yusuf Estes
Abdur Raheem Green
Bilal Philips
the current imam of alaqsa
and along with yusuf islam why not add sami yusuf for promoting haram music and nasheeds
What have they done this year that is great?
The whole point of an annual thing is that it is not a lifetime achievement award.
As for music, the opinion of the salf saliheen and the early residents of Madinah is that it is allowed, and is backed up by evidence from ahadith. but separate issue. feel free to open up a topic on music if you wish. (one topic only please.)
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
ANother person - an editor for the New statesman, Mehdi Hassan. He has been attacked loads by the right and racist wings of the press since being promoted to his position as an editor, and you can read his articles on that page to decide wether you agree or disagree with him.
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
dont worry i'll open it soon after, i deal with the others, this is one i specialise in, and have studied under many scholars to gain this knowlege.
why?
because he's famous, innit?
He has also in the past tried to bridge the divide between communities.

I nominate Salma Yaqoob from Respect Party for doing fanatstic job representing Muslims and Islam on the media and to the public and also being a role model for muslims especially Muslim women
So the short list so far this year is:
1. Amir Khan
2. Freddie Umar Kanoute
3. Salma Yaqub
4. Saeeda Warsi
5. Sami Yusuf
6. Yusuf Islam
No scholars have been mentioned to avoid bias n sectarianism; coz ppl normally nominate 'their' shaykh
You missed out Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Also Mehdi Hassan.
(and there are better reasons for not putting the scholars on the list - you should not be so afraid of ... what do you call it... sectarianism that you refuse to recognise when someone does something good. A better reason is "because they have not done much".)
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
how do u know what the scholars have done?
how can u say they 'havent ' done much?
and 99% of time ppl put fwd their shaykh or someone just from their sect. thats the truth.
Sami Yusuf?
What's he done that other Nasheed Artists haven't done?
i nominate...
myself
for being so great.
